"When he arrived at the door I knew I selected the right professional. He had drop clothes to lay on the floor to ensure no soot or creosote landed on our floor or rugs. He explained what he was doing throughout. He saw there were wasps and asked if we wanted to wait to hire an exterminator and he would come back later. We asked him to go ahead, he warned us that he would do his best to vacuum all of them but a few could get through. Outstanding and professional, when he finished he took his camera and showed us what it looked like and suggested a few things we needed to do prior to our first burning. He even explained how we to use our double fireplace. If you hire him you will get your money's worth from a very conscientious pro."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a chimney damper depends on several factors, including its material, how often the fireplace is used, and the amount of debris that enters the chimney. With proper maintenance, an average damper can last about 20 years. To ensure it is functioning correctly, it is best to have it professionally inspected. Some experts recommend an annual inspection, while others suggest having a chimney sweep inspect and clean it every two years. A professional can assess the damper's condition and determine if a replacement is necessary.

Pellet stoves are used as heat sources for homes. They work by burning biomass pallets, which might be composed of wood, sawdust, or food waste. The pellets are stored in the stove's hopper until the stove is ignited, at which point some are released into the stove's firebox to burn for heat. Unlike most fireplaces, pellet stoves have a thermostat that adjusts the temperature by releasing more or fewer pellets, depending on how warm you want to make your living space.

You should never block both the top and bottom of your chimney. Proper airflow is essential because the temperature inside the chimney will still fluctuate as your house warms and cools. Moisture can build up without ventilation, leading to dampness in your walls over time. Blocking the top prevents debris and animals from entering, but the chimney still needs air circulation to avoid condensation issues. Allowing the chimney to breathe maintains the health of your home and prevents long-term damage.

There are fire codes for a fireplace mantel made of wood or other combustible material. The mantel must be mounted at least six inches away from the fireplace opening on all sides with a non-combustible material—like stone or brick—installed between the mantel and fireplace. Building codes and regulations will vary based on your location, so before beginning the project, research the requirements in your area.

Wood stove fans are designed to operate quietly, emitting only a subtle hum from their motor. This low noise level ensures minimal disruption in your living space, allowing you to enjoy the warmth without distraction. The fan blades, which are engineered for efficient air circulation, contribute to the overall quiet operation. This makes wood stove fans a practical choice for maintaining a peaceful environment while effectively distributing heat throughout your room or home.
