Watch these guys. They tried to up-sale me on services that I did not need and caused me to be afraid of using my fireplace when it was really ok to use. Red River Chimney Service was scheduled 10 days out because it was their busy time of year. I Called on 10/17/20, it was scheduled for 10/27/20. The technician was over 30 minutes late. He seemed very knowledgeable about repairing wood-burning fireplaces but did not have mortar for a firebox repair, I had requested. He kept the floor around the fireplace very clean but did all work from the inside. He did not even get on the roof to look at the top of the chimney which I thought would be necessary. The work seemed to take longer than I thought. it should have mainly because he kept making phone calls, I assume to reach the owner. He ran a scope up the flue and said I had cracks in it, but I was watching the monitor, and I did not see anything that looked bad. I really needed some repair to my firebox mortar. I had told Rich about it, and he said he would send some Mortar with the chimney sweep when he came, but the chimney sweep did not know anything about that. He kept suggesting that I get a wood-burning stove installed at a cost of over $5000.00. When I rejected that (I do not want a wood-burning stove), he said I could either get gas logs installed, or have them come back out and treat the fly with a chemical for about the same amount, $5000. He did not give me anything written on his findings, It was really vague on what the problems actually were, and caused me to be afraid that the Chimney was unsafe. I paid $165 for the visit. I called and talked to the owner Rich the next day, after several tries to get him on the phone, and he said that I had stage 3 creosote. That is the first I had heard that. I went for a month being afraid to use my fireplace because of the Red River. I had also called and left messages with them to call back, but they never did, and I could never get him on the phone again. I had to hire someone else to fix my firebox mortar, and I decided I would get a second opinion about my chimney from another company. They only charged $125. Red River charged $165. This another company said it was actually safe to burn a fire in. I should have called them in the first place.
Response from Red River Chimney and Fireplace, LLC

"Sorry for this misunderstanding. We're glad you found someone to state your chimney is functional but we stand our original assessment that your fireplace is not safe to operate. Our technician showed you on camera in real-time multiple vertical cracks inside your chimney's flue. He also showed you stage 3 creosote. Cracks in your clay flue are no longer in control of heat and products of combustion and could cause a chimney fire or worse a house fire. Stage 3 creosote is also a source of chimney fires. Also, the present was honeycombed creosote in combination with vertical cracks indicate a chimney fire had already occurred which you confirmed by stating that the fire department was called to respond to the chimney fire at your house. RRCF removed 4 large buckets of creosote from your fireplace. It is rare to even remove 1 bucket of creosote. We believe that the safety inspection and cleaning of your flue is a value at $165 in the high season. Your chimney needs major repairs that include replacement of your clay flue or installing a wood-burning insert with a stainless steel liner. The minor repair of sealing your firebox with mortar will not make your fireplace functional with other major issues. That's why we did not do the minor repair with other major problems. We are school trained and certified chimney sweeps that take pride in giving homeowners the best possible advice to operate their fireplaces. If a chimney fire confirmed by the fire department will not convince you that there is an issue, there is probably little we can say to change your mind."
