"Outlaw Fencing installed our wooden privacy fence in 2012. I'm writing this review now (12.29.25) because we had record winds in Rapid City last week, reaching 100+ mph in downtown. Our neighbor's fence was blown away. Ours was just fine. The wind on the hill we live on can be ferocious and the guys who installed our fence did an awesome job! We frequently have high winds and our fence holds up every time. If we should move, I'd use them again in a heartbeat."

This depends mainly on how well the posts were installed and what type of wood was used to build the gate in the first place. Softwoods have a life expectancy of up to 15 years but can last slightly longer with regular maintenance and waterproofing treatments. By contrast, hardwoods can last up to 30 years with little care, so you may avoid costly replacements by spending a little more upfront.

The most affordable metal fence type is wire at just $3 to $5 per linear foot. Wire fences come in a variety of styles and do a good job of marking perimeters and keeping animals in or out of certain areas.
