"I hired the contractor to remove and replace a barbed wire fence between my property and the national forest behind. I told him the problem was with cows pushing thru my fence. I showed him the bench markers for the ends of my property. Unfortunately he extended into both my neighbor's property and one had nothing but complaints about it being done without his permission. He did not care that his fence got repaired at no cost to him, he was mad because it was done without consulting him. In the future I would recommend that the contractor either sticks to the area he was hired to fix OR to contact the neighbors directly and get their permission. The other neighbor did not care as he knew his fence needed to be fixed eventually."

"AWG has done a great job renovating the aging greenhouses at our school. We have rehired them multiple times and expect to continue our relationship for a long time. Joe is extremely knowledgeable and skilled and we especially appreciate his community focused outlook. He has volunteered to serve on our advisory committee and volunteered his time on numerous occasions to help make our program successful. I’d recommend anyone interested in greenhouse work to speak to him."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Staining a fence is less expensive than painting a fence due to the cost of materials and the longevity of the finish. Stain not only lasts longer than paint without chipping or peeling, but you also won’t have to put in the extra time and cost to prime the surface first.

The cost to build a fence is about $3,100 on average, but you could pay anywhere from $400 to $13,700 or more. Your cost will depend on the length, height, and materials for the fence. If you hire a professional installer, labor costs typically represent about half of the total cost of the project. This means you potentially can save quite a bit of money doing the work yourself.

Fence pickets typically face out (away from your home or the garden that you're enclosing). Both the rails and pickets sit on the outside of a fence so that anyone passing by can see the finished side. Not only does the look increase your curb appeal, but it's also the neighborly thing to do when placing a barrier between two properties, even when you're installing a privacy fence.

The best wood for a farm fence is pressure-treated wood that will stand up to various weather conditions, animal contact, and moisture. Farm fences need to resist rot and damage, so choose a species such as cedar or redwood. The natural oils in these woods give them decay resistance, which also makes them ideal for other fence types, such as a wooden snow fence.

Because this composite fencing and deck material is made from both wood and plastic, it’s more durable than either alone. It’s so popular for outdoor purposes because it really does stand the test of time. Heavy rain and high heat won’t greatly change its structural integrity; it can last up to 25 years in total with proper care.
