How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. Keep in mind that some states have a minimum septic tank size, and this often starts at 750 gallons. A 500-gallon septic tank may be too small to meet local regulations.

The fix could be as simple as restarting the power or priming the pump, especially if the trouble is occurring after a power outage.
