"We had some sheet rock water damage in our master closet which we traced to the roof vent for our Range hood. We called Ridge Roofing and had an appointment set up in a couple of days, Due to some weather damage Ridge Roofing was swamped on the appointed day, however we were notified promptly and were rescheduled for the next day, I am very happy that we were kept up to date and understand completely how things can get jammed up. Dustin Lee showed up the following day on time and after looking at our vent determined that the vent itself and the connection to the roof sheathing and the surrounding shingles were in good order and that the only thing that needed to be done was to remove and replace the tape that connects the duct to the vent. I am extremely happy with the results and Dustin refused any payment for his time. We will definitely be relying on Dustin and Ridge Roofing for any future roofing requirements."

"I had a leak, Carolina Roofing was the only one to come out to check it out. Other companies would schedule for 4 and 5 days out.. I needed someone now. The roof looks good and the cleaned up and you wouldn't know they had been here."

"Matt recently did a metal roof on my house and shop, to replace the old, leaky, decrepit asphalt shingles...which I was having to patch pretty much every time it rained. When he came out for a quote, Matt was absolutely painstaking in his measurements (impressive...one of the reasons I went with him for my new roof). Matt provided three detailed quotes, with different options. Once we decided on a roof, he scheduled quickly. He and his crew showed up exactly when promised (early actually). Working from home that week, I was able to watch the process. Matt took the time to make sure everything was right. I had a few difficult valleys, and he was meticulous to ensure that everything would be watertight. All of the angles and lines are perfect. Matt is a craftsman, plain and simple. He and his crew take pride in their work, which is refreshing, this day and age. Last but certainly not least, Matt is courteous and professional at all times. He and his crew were a pleasure to work with. They left my house exactly the way they found it (only, with a great new roof)."

"From the very beginning, Scott Gunter, the Hixon Company Representative, came to our home well prepared and with plans for an outdoor screened porch and to have a new roof installed. Scott delivered as he said he would, on time, and the best workmanship we could afford. Once here, theHixon crew went right to work. They were on time, quick, but yet, efficient. We couldn't be more happy with the roof. We did install a quality roof with architectural shingles. It was done in two days. There were many, friendly and efficient workers, all here at the same time. They worked very hard and were relentless in their efforts to please my wife and me."

"Quantum Roofing was great. I got a few different companies to check out my roof and provide bids and even before they came back with their actual numbers I was leaning toward Quantum because they were easy to communicate with and had great answers to all of my questions. I fully expected Quantum to have the highest bid as a result, but they actually came in just below the others! The roofing team knocked out my mid-sized roof (asphalt shingle install) in a single day, which was amazing. They were there from about 8 am to 9 pm and did a great job cleaning up the area. Multiple additional staff checked on the roofing team's progress and clean up work throughout the day and followed up with me several times to make sure I was happy with the work. Wouldn't hesitate to hire them again, highly recommended!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

It’s possible to walk on a clay tile roof, but you run the risk of breaking or cracking the tiles if you’re not careful, so it’s best not to walk on it if you can avoid it. If you or a contractor needs roof access, be sure to distribute your weight evenly and step on the portions of tile that are also supported underneath, which depends on your tile design. Walking on any roofing material is inherently dangerous, so wear rubber-soled shoes and use safety equipment if you need to access your roof.

The formula for calculating how many squares of roofing you need is pretty easy. Take the total amount of square footage and divide it by 100. With this formula in mind, a 2,000-square-foot roof would require 20 squares of roofing material to adequately cover it.

Generally, hailstones that are one inch in diameter or larger can cause significant damage to a roof. However, smaller hail can also cause damage, particularly when accompanied by strong winds, if it strikes an aging or poorly maintained roof, or if hailstorms are frequent in your area. Hail that is ¼ inch (pea-sized) or smaller poses a minimal risk of immediate, permanent damage, but cumulative impacts can cause deterioration over time. The extent of the damage also depends on the roofing material; hail-resistant tiles like slate or certain types of asphalt shingles can withstand impacts better than other materials. If you are concerned about potential damage after a storm, it is always a good idea to have a professional roofer conduct an inspection.

Roof work is dangerous and exacting, and a misstep could lead to even more costly repairs, so we do not recommend DIYing. If you are dead set on giving it a go, practice safety measures. Wear a harness, only work during mild weather, and have a partner to help. Potentially DIY-friendly jobs include patching up small leaks, sealing areas around the chimney, and replacing a few shingles.

In most cases, installing solar panels will not void your roof warranty. To keep roof warranties intact, check your written warranty or call the manufacturer to ask about clauses regarding roof penetrations. You can also protect yourself by getting written approval or a modified warranty that specifically allows the solar installation type you’re planning. Then, hire a professional solar installer that follows roofing manufacturer instructions and protects the roof during installation.
