"I called for preventive maintenance on a 14-year-old unit and wound up purchasing a new HVAC system. There was no sales pressure, just honest education on the status of my system. The office staff is very professional and pleasant, as are the technicians. They arrived on time, worked efficiently, and answered all my questions with knowledge and patience. So far, I'm very happy with their service."

"Damien came out and checked my unit and told me exactly what was wrong. The unit had a leak. He fixed the problem and checked back on several occasions to make sure that the unit was running properly ( never had a company to do a follow up like he did). Very impressed. He will be the only person that I will call for any future HVAC needs. Very professional and will highly recommend."

"Everything about my experience was terrific, from Allison in the office to Todd in the field. After 2 years in my house & 2 different companies, Todd came in & immediately assessed, & delivered solutions, to the issues Iâ d been complaining about. Additionally, their prices are very reasonable, whichâ having limited fundsâ I deeply appreciated. I am so grateful I found the."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. There is, however, another type of air conditioner called a swamp cooler that requires water to operate. If you have a swamp cooler, you may need to fill a reservoir with water and potentially ice. But a swamp cooler is different from a standard portable AC unit.

Fixing a leak in an AC unit costs $200 to $1,600, depending on the type of leak and any related damage. But depending on the age and condition of your AC, it might make more sense to replace the AC unit instead of repairing it. If your AC is only a few years old and relatively problem-free, then repairing it is the right call. But if it’s nearing a decade old and has other issues, consider replacing it.

This depends on the extent of the freezing. Some ACs only need an hour or two to thaw out, but others may need a full day to completely unfreeze. Once you turn off the system to let it unfreeze, check it periodically to make sure the drain pan doesn’t overflow. When you turn the system back on, keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t start freezing again.

To find a reputable HVAC company, start by researching providers in your area. Look for companies with mostly positive online reviews and check the Better Business Bureau’s website for customer complaints. Next, verify their credentials. Rule out any companies that aren’t licensed, as this is a requirement in some states and municipalities, and confirm they are insured. Once you have a shortlist, contact each professional to ask key questions: How many years of experience do you have? Do you hold any third-party certifications? Do you have experience working on my specific type of HVAC system or brand? Can you provide references? What is your per-hour pricing? Do you offer maintenance contracts for ongoing savings? Do you provide a warranty for your work?

Common signs of insufficient return air include uneven temperatures, with some parts of your home feeling hotter or colder than others, and noticeable differences in air pressure between rooms. You might also observe that more air is blowing in rooms closer to the AC unit. Leaky air ducts can also be a related issue or clue.
