"Stephen was great, my tub backed up with water and my toilet would not flush, turns out my septic field needed replacing. Very responsive, reasonably priced and best of all. I didn’t have to leave my home during the repairs. I’d give 10 stars if I could."

"Easy and prompt to contact and schedule. They were straightforward, prompt, and professional. They also scheduled quickly and advised me when truck was on its way to my house. They were respectful of me and my property and did an excellent job. I highly recommend them! Unlike others who are on this list who will not even give a ballpark figure for a simple pump of septic tank and want to charge just to come look at job. These are the guys you want if you need your septic pumped."

"Hometown septic solutions is an excellent company to work with. Eric was wonderful. He found my septic tank with ease without having to dig up the entire yard.. He did a great job cleaning it out, and gave me great advice for FUTURE use. He installed a new entry top that will be easy to locate next time. Everything was done within just a short time. Don’t hesitate, just hire them and they will do the best job ever and more. You won’t regret it!"

"After eight years in a new home and minimal use, I thought it was a good idea to check in on a septic tank clean out. It was timely as initial install left room for improvement! In addition, using non-biodegradable toilet paper compromised function. Repairs were needed and were completed on the spot! I was very happy with their communications every step of the way- they set expectations about impact and gave thorough explanations while showing me the issues. I made an informed decision about what was needed and have a warranty to boot!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

The average cost to replace a septic tank or install a new system is typically around $7,350, with a broader average range of $5,000 to $12,000. However, total project costs can vary widely, from $5,000 to as much as $22,500. Key factors influencing the price include the size and type of the septic system, the tank material, and the size of your house.

It's important to distinguish between the cost of the tank itself and the cost of the entire system installation, which is significantly more. For the tank alone, costs vary by size:

  • A tank for a one-bedroom house typically costs $500 to $900.

  • A 1,000-gallon tank, suitable for most one- to three-bedroom homes, costs between $900 and $1,500.

  • A tank for a five- or six-bedroom home generally costs $1,200 to $1,600.

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

There are many reasons you may want to extend the depth of an existing well or drill a new, deeper well on your property. A deeper well can tap cleaner water sources—shallow water may contain more contaminants. With a deeper well, you’ll also have an easier time reaching the water table depth (the level at which underground water is found) and can get past tricky soil conditions.

Plus, if your local building code requires a minimum well depth for safety and environmental standards, you’ll meet the code by digging a deeper well in the first place.

The best times of year to pump or empty a septic tank are spring and fall. Many professionals recommend spring because the ground has thawed, making the tank easier to access, and any snowmelt or rainfall can aid in proper drainage. Pumping before summer is also ideal to avoid conflicts with vacations or outdoor gatherings.

Fall is another great option, as contractors may be less busy than in the spring. Servicing the tank in late fall or early spring can also reduce the risk of overflow from extra precipitation during winter and spring.

While summer is a possibility, winter is generally not recommended. The ground is often frozen, which can make it difficult to access the tank, and the waste inside may also be frozen.

Septic tanks and cesspits are both types of sewage and wastewater systems, but they differ in key ways. The main difference between the two systems is that septic tanks separate sewage from wastewater and allow the latter to flow into a drainage field to filter and disperse into the soil. Cesspits don’t have outlets and instead, store sewage until it needs to be pumped by a professional.
