"We had to get a large retaining wall beside our driveway replaced. There was a very large holly bush that was causing the wall to bulge over the years. The estimates for the wall were all over the place (as high as almost 10k). We received many quotes and we went with Live Oak because their pricing was competitive but especially because they REALLY know their stuff about drainage. They removed the holly, completely replaced the retaining wall, graded the yard after removing old drains and adding a new one, and planted new shrubs. It was a large job and a bit nerve wracking but Tonya was awesome. She was available at any time and would respond to my texts if I had questions (even after hours and on the weekend). We had setbacks with bad weather but since her communication was so great, I wasn't concerned that we were behind schedule. I knew she was on top of it. The end result was a great looking wall."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you will need a building permit to put up a vinyl fence, especially if the fence is sitting on or close to your property line. You can ask your local building department or  fence installation company if your fence project will require a permit. If so, you can expect it to cost between $20 and $60. Your fence installer should pull the permit for you. Building without a permit could eventually require you to pay again to remove the fence and reinstall it after getting the job approved.

A silt fence should be buried in a trench that is 6 to 12 inches deep. A depth of at least 6 to 8 inches is necessary to prevent water and sediment from running underneath the fence. A deeper trench, up to 12 inches, provides better anchoring during wet and windy weather. To ensure proper installation, look for a red line on the silt fence fabric, which often indicates the correct burial depth. Always adhere to local guidelines and regulations; a professional contractor will be familiar with these requirements.

Determining the best type of fence to contain your pet can be tricky. Consult a pet fence installer and consider the following questions:

  • What size pet do you have? Some fence types, like chain link, are too short to contain large dogs.

  • Is digging an issue? Some fences, like brick or stone, help minimize digging at the fence line, where wood fences aren’t as adequate.

  • Do you need to block your pet’s view of the neighbor's yard? Some fences, like metal iron fencing and chain link, don’t offer an obstructed view.

A stockade fence is a common type of privacy fence. These fences consist primarily of side-by-side boards without any gaps, thus eliminating the possibility of anyone peeking into your property. Stockade-style fences also typically included pointed pickets on top for even more security. Other than these traits, stockade fences come in a wide variety of styles.

Of all the fencing options, the cheapest type is a repurposed pallet fence because it’s made of used materials that are easy to find for free. But if you’re not interested in the DIY game, customize a covered chain link fence or a plain wood fence to provide the best privacy possible.
