"Our 30 year old Trane furnace went out over Christmas and needed replacement. Ted responded immediately and was able to schedule the install the very next day. He took the time to explain all options and also had the best pricing on quality equipment. His team was very professional and took care of our home during the install. I highly recommend Ted Cook Heating."

"He was a little early, which was good, because we had no heat. We thought it might be the fuse, He checked, and it did need to be replaced. The heat still didn't work. A thermostat we installed was the same as the previous model (installed by another company). He took a long time to explain to us that the model we had wasn't the right one for our system and why. He is the first contractor to explain how our system is different. He replaced the thermostat with a different model. The price for the service call with the Angie's list discount was good. We could have purchased a new thermostat for less, but he told us that, and we went ahead since he was here, honest, and so informative. I will definitely call them again."

"I sent a message through Angies List and they responded almost immediately. I was called and given a 30 minute window of their arrival, plus the technician's name. Then the technician called me when he was on his way. He talked to me then went to work and immediately diagnosed the issue (chipmunk chewed the wiring argh!). He gave me a quote which I felt was quite reasonable and the repair only took about 45 minutes. After that, we spoke further about the Hvac (it's pretty old), he said it seems to be running well but obviously has some age to it. He advised I don't need it replaced but may want to consider some ongoing maintenance. He was nice and professional and answered all of my dumb questions. I would definitely call them again.

"1) Install a 40 gallon water heater 2) Remove the old one 3) Add a platform to elevate the new water heater for draining purposes 4) Install an electrical disconnect (the previous one was outside) 5) Install a water disconnect 6) Add pipes so that both the pressure release valve and the drain at the bottom could drain outside. 7) Drill through the wall so those pipes would reach outside. 8) Make serious adjustments to the existing piping to accommodate the newly raised water heater. I think that pretty much covers it... The service professional was great. Very informative and friendly, worked efficiently, and kept us filled in on what he was doing. He left the area around the water heater cleaner than he found it. They diagnosed and replaced the water heater on the same day I requested the work. The dispatcher was kind and informative and the final price was very close to the original estimate she provided. I would definitely recommend their services. And the whole water heater area looks so much more organized and neat then it did before. The price is high compared to a standard water heater replacement, but like I said, we needed a lot of updates. Price includes the new unit and all supplies."

"My downstair's airconditioning unit stopped worked.  I called another company that I had used before.  They took several days to come to the house.  They inspected the system and said I needed a new evaporator coil for the unit.  He also said my unit was 3 pounds low on freon, which he could replace at  $89 per pound.  But he said I would lose it when they replaced the coil since it couldn't be saved.  I thought I needed another opinion so I told him I would think about it and let him know.  In the meantime he called his office to ask them to give me an estimate on the cost of the coil.  I then called Tuck & Howell.  The tech came out that same afternoon.  He checked the whole system and agreed the problem was the evaporator coil.  He gave me a couple of options but I decided to go ahead and replace it.  He called his office for an estimate, which I got within the hour.  I arranged for him to install the unit two days later, which he did. He also checked the freon and said it was about 2 pounds low, which he could replace at $39 for the first pound and $15 a pound therafter (opposed to $89 per pound the other company charged).  He said he could save it when he replaced the evaporator coil so it wouldn't be wasted.  That allowed me to restart the airconditioning unit that same day to cool down my house that day.    He was on time for the appointment, had everything he needed with him, completed the job efficiently, professionally and quickly.  Once the unit was installed he cleaned up after himself and took away the mess.  The unit is working fine.  I have no complaints.  About two weeks later, the first company called be back with an estimate which was $200 more than Tuck & Howell had charged.  I told them to forget it.  I had used them several times before but will not again.  I highly recommend Tuck & Howell."

"The company called 15 min. before scheduled appointment. The plumbers showed up on time, well-dressed in company shirts, wore protective footwear upon entering home. They were courteous and professional, listened to what I needed done which was to have a brand new, in-the-box dishwasher installed and the old washer taken away. They said, "Great!". They went out to the truck to prepare my estimate because payment is expected at time of service. They returned and presented an estimate of $506.00 to install the dishwasher. I asked about the high price and was told this was a "flat fee" and couldn't be changed. I paid the dispatch fee, and said good-bye.

"The guys worked tirelessly to complete it all. My new heat pump and my sisters' were installed in a very timely manner with a big enough crew to accomplish it all promptly, and so far are working fine. Vaughn and Lucas came to my house from my mom's to install the capacitor on a Friday afternoon when I'm sure they wanted to get done early. Everything is going well at present, though my mother will need a new coil which is in process, but her air is working and the guys said they would return if anything else was needed. They all went above and beyond, helping me to seal up cracks and crevices and to put new screen wire over the vents due to the snakes, which I had started doing myself. They were courteous, respectful and informative, and stayed till the job was done! Thanks to Rhonda and Brandy at the phones, and to Jason and Andy as well!"

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

No, there isn’t always water in radiators. In a one-pipe system, water is constantly circulating from the boiler to the radiators and back. In a two-pipe system, water travels through two separate channels: one that goes to your radiators and one that returns back to the boiler so it can heat up again.

You can replace baseboard heaters with many other types of HVAC systems, including forced-air furnaces, hydronic heating, and heat pumps. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, so the best choice for you will depend on your budget, preferences, and the design of your house. If you aren’t sure which option is right for you, ask an HVAC pro for guidance.

One of the easiest ways to determine which type of furnace will work best for your home is to contact a professional in your area. Many HVAC companies offer free consultations to help potential customers determine if they need a new system and which type would work best for their home and the community’s climate.

Costs depend on unit size, labor, fuel type, and whether additional piping or venting is needed.
