"In addition to doing the job I needed, Andrew pointed out two areas in my natural gas utility that were less than safe. His estimate included those fixes, and it was more reasonably priced than expected. Thanks Andrew."

I am a full service general contractor who specializes in pre-fabricated fireplaces, stoves, and inserts, with over 10 years of experience. I am a service specialist for gas and wood fireplaces, pellet stoves and inserts. I promise installation, service & repair on time and always working towards customer satisfaction. Call first for the expert to verify your installation site.

"I hired this company to fix a problem with a gas fireplace. Flame kept going out, followed by pilot light going out. They sent a tech who cleaned out the fireplace, and said the problem was fixed. Charged me $276. One week later same problem returned. Same tech came out and said the problem was that the batteries in my remote were bad! Changed batteries and said problem was solved. Charged me another $276. Four days later, same problem returned. Called Steve Mazzocca, the owner who proceeded to yell at me and berated me because I complained that the problem was still not fixed. Very bad customer service."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

Fixing a gas leak costs about $45 to $150 per hour for a plumber or gas line specialist. The job’s overall cost will vary depending on the location of the leak. A leaky junction or connection behind the stove or dryer will likely cost about $120 to $170. But for a leak that requires a gas fitter or plumber to excavate a pipe in the yard, the cost could rise to $1,500 to $5,000. Keep in mind that gas leaks are very serious issues, so don’t hesitate to contact a plumber or gas line specialist immediately.

Venting a gas water heater out of the roof is preferable in most cases. Heated exhaust gases naturally rise, so a vertical vent pipe is efficient. If you’re trying to vent through a pipe exiting a wall, the angle of the pipe may be more horizontal than vertical, making the venting system less effective. If you go through a wall, you may need to add a fan to ensure a successful expulsion of the gases outdoors.

Appliances typically connected to a gas line include gas stoves, water heaters, furnaces, and gas fireplaces. Essentially, any appliance in your home that uses gas needs to be connected to a gas line, which connects your home with the main gas line owned and operated by your gas company.

The size of a pipe isn’t always the outside or inside diameter. Rather, it’s a nominal diameter that depends on the type of pipe. For male pipes, you’ll need to measure the outside diameter. For female pipes, you’ll need to measure the inside diameter. You’ll then need to use a nominal diameter conversion chart to get the actual pipe size you’d buy in the store.
