"This was the second time I reached out to Snowscapes. We were in need of an expert opinion about a very large, old and what appeared to be dying ash tree. Because I used Snowscape services at my own home, I didn't hesitate when we needed their services at our child care center. In both situations, Andy was responsive, punctual, honest and ultimately brought with him an extremely professional team of workers. It was amazing how quickly the team brought the ash tree down, trimmed the trees from the fence line, chipped all and cleaned our entire playground allowing us back outside to play in the afternoon. (And it rained the entire time) An extremely professional group that we appreciate!!"

"We have had Artistic Treescapes replace mulch, trim trees and design and construction a new flower bed over the past few years. The crew doing the work are very conscientious and professional. We are very pleased with the work product. Prices are fair.We have had multiple favorable comments from our neighbors about their work. Our only concern is that it sometimes takes 3 or 4 phone calls or emails to even get a response from Jeff. Although this can possibly be explained this year with the shutdown, this has also happened in the past. We would definitely use Artistic Treescapes for any landscape work in the future."

Small jobs welcome

"Colt’s property service has done multiple projects for me and has done a good job with all of them. Most recently he regraded underneath my deck. And replaced the old footings. It was very tight and tricky to get a machine in, but he managed with no problems. Would definitely recommend going forward."

"Jason, his brother, and team did a great job of removing English ivy and shrubbery that had grown out of control in my yards Using equipment, they made swift work of the removal, added screened top soil, and reseeded with a good quality seed that began growing within a week (with rain and watering). Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Hiring an arborist or tree surgeon is usually more expensive than a standard tree company, but it is often worth the investment. Arborists have education and certifications that standard companies typically lack, leading to a more professional, expert-level service. Their expertise is particularly valuable for diseased or infested trees, as they can ensure safer removal and help prevent the issue from spreading. Additionally, arborists may be necessary for work near power lines, as uncertified companies are often not permitted to service these trees. If your goal is to preserve the health of your trees, an arborist is the best choice. Their services, such as stump grinding, are also performed with greater expertise to ensure a safe depth that won't cause your lawn to collapse over time.

Generally, you should prune around 20% of an apple tree’s growth—and never more than 30%. This means that if you have a severely overgrown tree, it can take a few seasons to prune it back enough to produce the healthiest fruit.

If you’re dealing with a newly planted or juvenile tree, hold off on pruning beyond the initial shaping. Wait at least a couple of seasons into fruit production since pruning can increase the number of water sprouts and unproductive foliage.

Not all evergreen conifers need to be pruned, but some do. Pruning pine trees is not necessary, but you can do so during June and July if you wish. On the other hand, spruce, firs, and junipers do need to be pruned from late winter to early spring.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. In fact, it’s a good idea to use geography to identify wood and determine which types of trees are in your yard.

Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!
