"I hired Hughes Electrical to install my electric vehicle charging station in my garage, and they did a wonderful job! William and his apprentice ran a new 50 amp electrical line from my electric box to my charging station, going through the basement and up the side wall. Afterwards, they gave me a free inspection and an estimate for new outlets outside. I am very pleased to have worked with them and will be recommending them to all my neighbors!"

"Friendly, knowledgeable electrician. Showed up on time. Explained to me that he could not give me an estimate because it could be a simple job or, not so simple. Wouldn't know until he examined problem, and that could not happen until I hired him. *I Understood and I hired him. Repair took 30-minutes. I had him check something else because I had agreed to pay a minimum of 1-hour. The additional electrical check took another 15-minutes. ... Payment time came and he said he would charge me $60 instead of the $65 (per hour) quoted. I said thanks and wrote the check. He then said, "I forgot. I also have to charge you a $24 'lead fee' that Home Advisor charges me". ... I did not like the "after-sale" bump but paid it anyway. Since when does a customer have to pay for the marketing a contractor does? ... So, my recommendation to any reader of this review is this: He did great work. Was prompt and professional but, but, but, find out EXACTLY what his time will cost you INCLUDING any "fringe" charges if any. Don't let what I allowed to happen to me happen to you."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Motion sensors are actually an eco-friendly option and don’t use as much electricity compared to other lighting sources. Motion sensor lights are always on “standby,” which requires a phantom source of power at all times, but for most sensor light models, this is only a small amount of electricity—typically around one watt of power.

Inverter generators are designed to turn on the engine when your appliances demand more energy. This is in contrast to running at full capacity as soon as they’re turned on, like a standard portable generator does. So long as the wattage rating is high enough, an inverter can power a refrigerator just as well as a traditional generator.

Yes, a water leak poses a major fire risk at your home because water is a conductor of electricity. Water that comes into contact with sparks or electrical wires can instantly ignite flammable materials. Additionally, any type of exposure to water can cause wires and other electrical components within your home to corrode. When assessing categories of water damage, it's important to know that even a small amount of moisture near wiring could cause sparks that lead to a fire.

Ultimately, the best device depends on what you’re measuring. A voltmeter only measures volts, while a multimeter measures volts, current, resistance, humidity, and possibly much more, depending on the model. If you think you’ll need to measure more than volts, consider investing in a multimeter so you have a tool that can help you with various household projects.

You can run a small or basic standard-size refrigerator on a 15-amp circuit. But you should plug a modern, standard-size refrigerator into a 20-amp dedicated circuit. The refrigerator needs to be on a dedicated circuit, meaning it is the only appliance and outlet on that circuit breaker. This method prevents tripping the breaker and reduces the chance of an electrical fire
