Small jobs welcome

"We recently had Jeff install a new electrical outlet and he was able to squeeze us in right before Christmas even with his busy schedule. In the past we've had him repair siding and do a basement remodel and he's been great with everything. He went out of his way to make sure the siding replacement matched the old color perfectly when it was very difficult to find. I've seen a lot of siding repairs not match the original color so this seems to be uncommon. He transformed our basement from a basically unusable space to what's now probably my favorite room in the house. He's always been a pleasure to deal with, honest about work that needs to be done, and responds very quickly. One of the things I appreciate most is that he'll do a job the way you want it to be done and do it the right way. We've had too many people try to cut corners and tell us how they want things done so it's refreshing to find a professional that will treat you right. Highly recommended!"

"Chris was recommended by a colleague who is a perfectionist. I therefore knew immediately this would be a great referral. We needed Chris to undo a badly botched wallpaper removal & paint job. A number of paint contractors had assessed this job & refused to take it on. Chris’ team acknowledged that it would be a difficult job but in the end did stunning work. Importantly, they started & completed the work in the time frame promised. He also kept to his original quote & checked daily on our satisfaction. Without a doubt the best painting work we have had done in 35 years. We would definitely hire Chris for any future projects & recommend him highly."

"Great experience with Hepp Landscaping! Brandon had a great plan to replace the old landscaping in the back of our home. The crew that came to work on our yard was professional and tidy. They made sure we were happy with all the plant placement before they started. Even added a couple of plants for us at the last minute, and completed the job in the time frame promised."

Customers say: Quality work

"We hired Mike initially to fix the drywall and paint the interior of the condo that we were planning to move in. He was very easy to communicate from the beginning to the end, showed up on time and worked hard every day, did a thorough job that did not miss any details and gave us a very fair price. Because we liked him so much, we ended up hiring him for other jobs including plumbing, lighting, installing appliances and cabinet painting. Throughout this process, he was trustworthy, very knowledgeable in his work and tried really hard to accommodate my schedule. Although we were on a tight schedule, we were able to move into our apartment on time because of his excellent work ethic. I would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him for any home improvement projects."

Customers say: True professional

"Jim, Anthony, and Nicole did an outstanding job resurfacing our kitchen cabinets. Everyone thinks we replaced them because of how professionally Munion Cabinets performed the resurfacing. They also did an outstanding job installing a ceramic tile floor in our powder room as well as panel flooring in the laundry room. I highly recommend Munion Cabinets for any type of remodeling work. They are professional and honest and very easy to work with."

"John was very responsive in providing the estimate and answering questions I had. He finished the deck project within the timeline he had promised. He even came back to fix a small area that had been damaged by one our our dogs. I would definitely hire John again."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
