"Gone are the days when people respect others time. I must say Mike was punctual on both days. The work was done at a very reasonable time and to a very high standard. I would definitely conduct business again and refer this business to anyone who's in need of a chimney inspection."

"Charlie and his company are professionals. Communication was quick and courteous and done through multiple means (HomeAdvisor, phone call and text) and they were available for appointments within 48-72 hours. Charlie showed up right on time the day of; introduced himself and provided a business card and informational pamphlet; was very through and informative while explaining cleaning procedures and answering any questions I asked him; and was ultimately neat, clean, and fast. He was finished with our wood stove chimney within 30-45 minutes, possibly even sooner than that. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking the same services, and will be calling him and his company from now on. Thank you very much!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s possible to install a wood-burning stove through the wall. The process is similar to venting the stove through the ceiling, but you’ll need to be careful of electrical wiring, plumbing, studs, and other potential obstructions in your walls. If you’re not comfortable with this type of work, call a professional who installs wood-burning stoves.

The primary disadvantage of a ventless fireplace is that it doesn’t have an exterior venting system. This means that the byproducts from combustion are emitted into your home, which raises some safety concerns. In addition, ventless gas fireplaces produce moisture as they burn—and if there’s no ventilation, you could end up with a mold problem.

In many cases, it is worth repairing an old fireplace. You can repair any portion of the fireplace, and even extensive repairs will usually cost less than a full replacement. Most fireplace repairs cost around $600 and top out around $2,500. Replacing your fireplace will cost around $2,500 and reach as high as $4,000. Not only will fireplace repair save you money in most cases, but the process is also much less invasive and time-consuming, so you’ll only have to set aside one day to be home for the work rather than multiple days.

How you stop your fireplace from smoking depends on the cause. Sometimes it’s as simple as opening the damper. Other times, you need to battle air pressure. The best course of action is to ensure proper ventilation, whether that means opening a door or a window; avoid building a large fire, which produces more smoke; and use seasoned hardwoods, which produce less smoke than other types of wood. If the issue persists, call a pro ASAP.

The damper, located just above the firebox, can open or close the chimney flue. The damper should remain closed unless there’s a fire burning in the fireplace. Closing the damper prevents energy loss through the chimney and cold air from seeping into the home during the winter. Opening the damper helps maintain airflow when there is a fire and prevents smoke and gases from venting into the house.
