"Chris replaced a backsplash in our new house. The previous owner had installed subway tile himself and it was done horribly. Chris came highly recommended by a previous client, and he did not disappoint. Chris was on time and professional. He removed the previous backsplash, replaced the drywall, and installed the glass mosaic tile we purchased. Chris advised us on grout and offered additional decorative decisions; the end result surpassed what we envisioned. We highly recommend Chris for any tile work and will definitely use him again for future projects."

"I am absolutely thrilled by the work done by the Barranco Brothers. Their communication was excellent, and I felt well informed throughout the entire process. Everything was completed and a very timely fashion, causing very minimal interruption to our daily routines. They installed a porcelain tile floor, painted and installed wainscoting, and installed a new toilet. The work is flawless. We purchased the tile, toilet, and wainscoting boards, and they provided everything else. We will not be hiring anyone else for future projects!"

"Steve is A-mazing. The care and attention to detail is like nothing I have ever seen before. My new backsplash looks fabulous. He made sure everything lined up and the cut around the window ledges are a work of art. Wish I had found him a decade ago. Have lined up at least 3 additional project him. Wish there were more stars. Definitely recommend him."

"Mitchell was on time every day. We discussed layout and length of time needed on this job. Mitchell was right on the money and extremely professional. He cleaned up every day and his work is impeccable. Working with Travertine in a bldg that's approx 90 years old was quite a challenge. Mitchell knew exactly how to level off the floor and he also had to work around kitchen cabinets that were already installed. Beautiful job Mitch we're very happy. We then decided to paint the kitchen,Mitch did a great job. We'll see you in July for our floors!!! Thank You for a job well done. Joe/Cass Weber"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Travertine is a natural stone, while porcelain is ceramic. You can enjoy the best of both worlds with porcelain travertine tiles. Some people prefer porcelain to travertine because it doesn’t require regular maintenance and it’s easier to clean. Porcelain travertine looks like the real thing but only costs $3 to $6 per square foot.

Lack of durability is the most significant downside of painting tile. However, a painted tile backsplash doesn't see the same kind of action as, say, painted flooring tiles. For backsplashes, the durability of the finish is crucial because they often require cleaning. However, you can minimize the durability problem by using mild cleaners and water on the painted surfaces.

A cement backer board is not needed for laying tile on concrete. Sometimes referred to as a cementitious backer unit, or CBU, backer board should be used if the subfloor is plywood or OSB. The backer board provides a base on which to install the tiles that isn’t as likely to be damaged by any accidental water seepage as natural materials would be.

Glass tile can cost as much as or more than other durable tile types. When choosing the right tile for you, knowing the advantages and disadvantages of each can help you make an informed decision. The pros and cons of glass tile include:

Pros

  • Light-reflecting to add brightness

  • Waterproof and mold-resistant

  • Made from recyclable materials

Cons

  • High cost compared to similar and more durable materials

  • Usually requires professional installation

  • More easily scratched compared to materials like ceramic and porcelain

Updating your backsplash without removing the tile is possible in a couple of different ways. First, you can remove the old grout and replace it with new grout to give your backsplash a fresh look. You can also change the grout color, which can have a surprisingly large impact on the final appearance of the backsplash. Finally, you can paint the original tile to totally change the look of the backsplash without removing it.
