"The ground at the back of my house was a mess after we tore down a shed that probably dated from when my house was built in the late 1800's. I wanted to put in a new shed, but was concerned about what it was going to cost to have the ground prepared and the recommended foundation laid. Bob gave me an estimate that was less than I expected and offered to clean away about 10 years accumulation of debris the area for a nominal extra charge. He explained what he would do and how, and was able to arrange a date to do the work within about 2 weeks. He arrived when he said he would, he and his crew got to work and the job was finished within about 2 hours. He was cheerful and friendly and very easy to work with. He also did a great job, and ended up charging me slightly less than the estimate."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

Homeowners in Johnstown often underestimate how wet springs and harsh winters affect installation timing and material selection. Drainage planning is crucial due to frequent flooding, and working with clay or rocky soils can complicate post installation. Many overlook the need for both city and county permits, or fail to budget for weather delays and ongoing fence maintenance in this region.

Helpful?

After finishing a fencing project in Johnstown, inspect posts for shifting caused by freeze-thaw cycles, and tighten any loose hardware as the ground settles. Apply a weatherproof sealant before spring rains to protect wood. Each season, clear leaves and debris from the fence line, check for ice or water damage, and confirm proper drainage. Annually, verify property lines and review local zoning compliance.

Helpful?

Johnstown’s hilly terrain and flood-prone zones often require stepped fencing designs and flood-resistant materials. Clay and rocky soils demand deeper post installation and careful drainage planning. For older homes, matching historic fence styles is common, while neighborhoods with unclear property boundaries or strict guidelines may require professional surveys and extra planning to ensure compliance.

Helpful?

Signs that fencing in Johnstown may need to be redone include posts heaving from frost, visible rot or rust at ground level, and panels that loosen after storms. Sagging gates, widening gaps between panels, or corroded hardware also indicate structural issues. Fences that exceed local height limits or cross property lines can create compliance problems requiring replacement or major repairs.

Helpful?

In Johnstown, letting water collect near fence posts, using de-icing salt around the fence, or allowing ice to build up can quickly cause deterioration. Allowing dense vegetation to grow against the fence encourages rot in humid summers. Failing to promptly fix loose boards, using string trimmers too close, or exposing the fence to lawn chemicals can all reduce the lifespan of your fencing.
