Customers say: Quick response

"Tom is an expert in this field. He is a wealth of information during the energy audit. He is complete and takes the time to ensure he is measuring things correctly and most importantly to answer any questions so you understand. You need to try this service if you live in an older house. Our house was like night and day after the insulation work in walls, floors, and some ceilings. The house was easier to heat. An added bonus was how quiet it became. Tom will come back in the spring for another energy audit after we finish some final work. This will find any gaps and help prove the benefits we have already seen. Tom came back and did a post review to confirm the steps and work. While we saw and felt results, the technical results were amazing. What great follow through by a contractor! I have hired him for again for additional work as he does other home efficiency recommendations and work besides insulation. Highly recommend using and taking his advice."

"They come once a year. They don't appear to have a standard checklist for what their technicians are suppose to do. Consequently, everyone does something different. In addition to that, they don't appear to have the appropriate training because they come up with various levels of conclusions. One guy might say everything is fine, another guy says you need a new air conditioner. Another guy says a new humidifier and a new filter. It's nice that they come and look at the furnace. I can get about as much out of it if I send them a picture. I had this done for about 10 times and that's what's occurred in over 10 visits. Some people re excellent. They do a wonderful job. Other people are clueless. They want his and they want that. The air conditioner is still running and that was two years ago. On the other hand because of that service contract, if there's any problem, I go to the top of the list for prioritization. I get an immediate response for anything I call in. For the most part, I think it's the labor, there's no cost on minor repairs. I pay them $28 a month. They come when you call them and they do a reasonable job."

"Initially we made contact and we couldn't set a date. I didn't hear from them and tried them back in the summer. They never called us back. I feel there was a lapse in the communication. The people on the phone were very professional and nice -- but there was just no follow through."

"I recently purchased a house that left a lot to be desired when it came to the wiring, panel and fuse boxes in the basement. The service was only 100 amp as well. I wanted to upgrade to 200 amp service and get the rats nest of wires in the basement fixed. I searched Angie's List and found Mike's Electric. He had a good rating and great reviews so I gave him a call. Despite that fact that I was an hour away, Mike had no problem coming out to take a look and provide me with an estimate. He originally quoted me between $1900-2000 to do the upgrade and installation. He was very flexible in working with me and my hectic schedule and called to schedule the work within a week of doing the estimate. He maintained the original quote despite the fact that the work was probably more extensive than what he first realized. They cleaned up very nicely after themselves once the work was completed and he even called the next day to ensure that I wasn't having any issues. To sum it up, Friendly, Courteous and Professional. A top-notch job and I'd hire him again in a heartbeat."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

When combined with a substantial solar system, if you have enough Powerwalls, you could go off-grid and be energy independent. But remember, you'd need enough Powerwalls to power your whole home continuously because a single Powerwall can’t power large appliances for extended periods. One Powerwall is able to power an average-sized home's emergency circuits, lights, and outlets. To power large appliances, you likely need two or three Powerwalls.

Hawaii is currently rated as the most expensive state for utilities. How much are utilities for a house in Hawaii? With electricity costs in Hawaii totaling nearly 42 cents per kilowatt-hour, residents are paying more to run their households than any other residents. Electricity costs in Hawaii are so high, mostly due to the fact that most of the electricity available to residents is produced using oil that must be shipped in from other places.

Blower door tests are measured in a few different ways, but the most popular are air changes per hour (ACH) and cubic feet of air (CFM) moving through the house per hour. A good ACH score is less than 2ACH, but 1ACH is better. This means the house experiences a total air change within 60 minutes (for 1ACH). For 2ACH, there’s a complete change every 30 minutes, and so on. CFM scores are similar in that a lower score means less air change, and therefore less leakage.

There are energy-efficient options when building a cottage. Select green building materials, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient windows when designing your cottage. Options such as solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and LED lighting can lower your utility bills and reduce your environmental impact. Many builders offer energy-efficient upgrades as part of the design process.

A blower door test shouldn’t take more than an hour, and most can be completed in less than 30 minutes. Expect the test to take longer once you start searching for leaks with thermal imaging or want to include sealing such leaks in the time estimate. The test doesn’t take much time and can’t be rushed, but it will take longer in large homes or those with many air leaks.
