If you don't have access to commercial equipment, you can utilize a pickaxe or circular saw with a masonry blade to break up asphalt. However, this is generally only effective in small areas. A jackhammer is usually needed to break up slabs of asphalt into smaller pieces. The most effective method when removing an entire driveway is an excavator that breaks apart and pries away asphalt.

Once your concrete is broken down into chunks, it is time to remove it. The easiest way to do this is to hire a concrete hauler or junk removal service—however, this is also the most costly option. Taking it to a landfill yourself is cheaper but much more work. Posting a classified ad or enquiring with local landscaping companies or concrete suppliers are more sustainable options, but only if you find an interested party to recycle the concrete for another construction project.

Removing fence posts that are set in concrete is something you can't do by hand. You will need an excavator, a strong post-puller, or a jackhammer. If you plan on recycling the concrete base, you may be able to cut the post out with a jackhammer and then set the new post in the existing base. However, it's usually better to remove both the fence post and concrete together. Due to the weight of concrete, you will need a hydraulic removal tool.

Whether you hire leaf removal done during the spring or fall or both, it’s often a good time to have the leaf removal company tackle other projects if they offer other lawn services. Other projects to bundle with leaf removal include:

  • Junk removal: $60–$600

  • Mowing: $50–$200

  • Weeding: $70–$150

  • Mulching: $75 per cubic yard

  • Hedge and tree pruning: $75–850

  • Lawn aeration: $0.10–$0.35 per square foot

  • Garden cleanup: $45–$75 per hour

What you do with excess concrete depends on the amount you have left over. For large amounts of excess concrete, you can rent a dumpster from a company that specializes in concrete disposal. Another option is to take your leftover concrete to a landfill or transfer station—just make sure you call your preferred location first to make sure they accept concrete.
