"I was in desperate need of windows that would update my 1990s built home. The previous windows wouldn't keep out the heat or cold of the seasons. The noise from the outside was clear and they were not very secure. After seeing the offer from Zen windows for triple pane windows with an insulated frame I was interested. I looked at them and another highly rated provider on Angie's List. I was impressed by the low complaint rate, high service rating, and their use of technology to speed up the estimate process. When I asked them for an estimate I had one in less than 24hrs that matched the design of my windows. Any time I had a question it was answered promptly and courteously. I am so glad that I chose them. Their crew for the installation and confirmation measurements were very customer focused and worked hard to provide a quality installation. The 2 small items I brought to their attention and asked questions about were resolved promptly, courteously, and very knowledgeably. When my last minute questions and discussion threw off the process of the lead installer and he forgot to give me the key to my sliding glass door it was resolved in less then 30 minutes. I emailed Zen Windows to inform them of the oversight and asked to have them mailed to my house. The owner responded and confirmed that they would honor my request. From top to bottom this company has quality employees who are customer and quality focused. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a company who won't cut corners. Their focus on quality doesn't make them the cheapest on the market, but it does make them the best value and service for your hard earned dollars. My installation was worth every penny!"

"Roy was very helpful with the quotes and ordering. Which included, a new door, storm door as well as new deadbolts installed throughout. It was nice to have a company that did not feel the need to sell us a new door and suggested simply repairing the existing as it could be easier fixed. The order did take longer than anticipated to receive, and I had to follow-up with Roy on several occasions in order to get a status which was slightly disappointing. When it came scheduling, they were very busy and took several phone calls before I was finally able to reach the installer and get it scheduled. Slightly frustrating since i also work in the customer field I really expect a company to be on top of things like this. On the day of the install, the installer backed into our newly cut maple tree(and paid for) and took a few significant branches. I will say that they were kind in providing us with a discount for the trouble, but it was still frustrating all the same. I was originally quoted one day for the work to be completed, it ended up taking almost two days. Their quality of work with the door and all items was really great. The hardware was sturdy and everything was really nice quality."

Doors questions, answered by experts

Security experts recommend deadbolt locks as the most secure option for a house's exterior or entry doors. Deadbolts provide the best security because they can prevent most types of forced entry and are harder to lockpick. Common types include the standard single-cylinder deadbolt, which is often found on front doors. For enhanced security, you can opt for a double-cylinder deadbolt, which requires a key to operate from both the inside and the outside.

The best material for door sills depends on durability, aesthetics, and budget. Standard options include wood, metal, and stone. Wood offers a classic look but may require more maintenance. Metal sills, like aluminum or stainless steel, boast durability and resistance to corrosion, making them suitable for modern designs. Stone sills, such as granite or marble, provide elegance and longevity but are more expensive. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference and practical considerations.

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

Most of the time, a squeaky door is the result of dry hinges, where metal parts rub together without enough lubrication. Dirt, dust, or rust can also build up inside the hinge and add to the friction. Loose screws or slight misalignment can shift things just enough to create that irritating squeaking noise. Worn-out hinges or swelling wood from humidity changes can also be part of the problem on older doors. A good cleaning and proper lubrication usually take care of it, but if the squeak sticks around, it’s worth checking for bigger issues with the hinges or alignment.

Start by checking the top or side edge of the door. Look for a certification label or metal tag stamped with details like the fire rating and information on the manufacturer. Even if it’s painted over, the tag should still be visible. Next, look along the edges for slim intumescent strips. They’re designed to swell up and seal gaps when exposed to heat. Finally, check if the door closes itself. Most fire doors have a self-closing mechanism, like an overhead closer or spring hinges. If none of these are obvious, contact a fire safety professional to help verify your door.
