"I hired Jack and crew to replace a portion of my deck. For a nominal fee, Jack came out, evaluated my deck and gave me an estimate. The nominal fee went toward the estimate, which I thought was fair and reasonable. The cost I felt was fair, not cheap, but not expensive. Jack is very attentive to details, communicative, and was happy to explain what they were doing during the process. The craftsmanship was top-notch. Not only do I strongly recommend Jack and crew for your decking needs, but have hired him to clean and treat my decks this coming fall."

"Everything went very well! The crew was here promptly each morning and put in a full day’s work, cleaning up after themselves each day. They were professional and explained what was being done and why. My project was reasonably priced and completed within a few days with essentially no wait time for the start. The fence was well done and I was very satisfied."

"Dan DePriest came to give an estimate for powerwashing the deck floor and applying a clear sealer. He came on the same day that we called him. He was available to do the powerwashing that day, too, so we agreed to have him start right away. He did an excellent job washing the deck that had stains and winter dirt and green mold. He even washed the deck railing and the barbecue cover. He moved everything off  the deck in order to do the work. After allowing the deck to dry out, he returned three days later to replace the one board and to apply the clear seal to the deck floor. He used a long-handled paint pad to apply the sealer and took his time to cover the deck well. It has never looked better.

"We called RJL Enterprises for an estimate on concrete work we needed done; Ray, the owner of the company, returned our phone call promptly and scheduled an appointment to come out and discuss the job. He showed up on time. He brought photos of other jobs his company had done so we could see examples of their work. He suggested several ways to do the job; in the end, we decided not to patch but to replace. His final estimate was excellent. Ray and the crew showed up early on the scheduled day and got right to work. They were friendly and polite and the guys always cleaned up after each day's work. They were considerate of our neighbor's property as well. All of the concrete work was performed on schedule (demo, building the forms, pouring, finishing, etc.) over a period of three days. They used very sturdy wood to build the forms so that the poured concrete didn't bulge. The day after all the concrete work was complete, two of the guys returned to repair the porch and add a few finishing touches. We are very impressed and so are our neighbors. We were so pleased with the beautiful finished product we gave them a bit of a bonus in the final payment on the job. We had a very positive experience with this company!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

PVC decking tends to be cooler than composite because the material is less dense and absorbs less heat. However, it depends on the deck’s color. A dark-colored PVC deck may run hotter than a light-colored composite deck. If you’re concerned about your deck getting too hot, it’s best to stick to a light color such as beige or gray.

Yes, adding railing to a deck is a great way to improve safety and your home’s aesthetic appeal. Railings can be constructed from wood, metal, or composite, and there are plenty of choices regarding design and style. Always consult local building codes before starting any building project—there are often requirements regarding spacing and height that can differ slightly from place to place.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.
