"3 years ago, I was hired by the Champs to refinish hardwood flooring in one of their bedrooms. I explained to the client that oil-based polyurethane would be the best option for the finish due to the age/condition of the floors. He was insistent on not using any oil-based polyurethane or volatile organic compounds (VOC) due to concern for their children’s health. In 2024, the Champs hired me to refinish additional hardwood floors in their home. Again, I tried to explain that the oil-based polyurethane would be best, but they refused. I offered to do the bedroom that was previously done along with this project but they declined. After the completion of each phase of this project, there was a walk-through of the finished areas. The final phase was to refinish/hang trim and restoration of a door. I recommend that the baseboard be taller to conceal the old plaster line. The client agreed so we proceeded. The project was put on hold to replace the diffusers. Therefore, we could not proceed with the installation of the trim. While waiting, we received a complaint regarding the finished product of the floors. I met with [Member Name Removed] to do a walk-through and discuss the issues and potential resolutions, including redoing the entire job. He suggested he may hire someone else. I offered to turn in a claim to my insurance company to try to get the client some or all of their money back. The insurance company felt that I was not at fault for the result of the floors due to their age/condition and the finishing product selected by the client. Finally, I offered to split the cost of the new contractor less the $3,500 that was owed. Client declined. In conclusion, I tried to explain to the Champs multiple times that the water-based finish would not be the best option. Ultimately the new contractor used oil-based varnish or VOC. Unfortunately, the additional money spent by the Champs to have this job done again was truly due to their product selection of the water-based finish and not the work performed."
