"Jim and his crew showed up on time each day and worked quickly and professionally. He was patient as we re-scheduled a couple of times due to financial issues, but when the day came he showed up bright and early and did quality work. He and John were very friendly, they are very knowledgeable about their craft, and Jim even replaced the cap on our chimney at no extra charge when he saw it was the cause of water infiltration at the top. If we need further masonry done down the road we will definitely call Michener again, but according to Jim the chimney work at least should outlive him."

"Clark Phillips personally came to give me a quote on the work, then a few weeks later his mason, Brandon called me to follow up and he also came out to look at the work that needed to be done. Then called again to see if I wanted to schedule. I felt very secure with their assessment of the work and estimate so I went ahead and scheduled the work to be done early December. They called to delay it a few days due to the weather. When Brandon began the work he completed it within 2.5 days. He was very neat and cleaned up everyday. Clark came back on the last day to review the job with me I'm very happy with the work done and would highly recommend Phillips Masonry."

"Their team was very professional and fast. We needed all our our lentels replaced and much of our chimney re-pointed and they had everything done in 3 days. There were no complications or mistakes made and we are very please with the work we had done. My husband and I would hire them again for any future needs, but are satisfied that thankfully we probably will not need to hire them in the near future because of the sound and stable work they completed on our home."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The main difference between an outdoor wood furnace versus an outdoor wood boiler is what each appliance is heating. An outdoor wood furnace burns wood to create heat, which warms the air and moves it through the ducts in your home. An outdoor wood boiler uses the heat from burning wood to warm water, which goes through pipes to radiators in the home.

Chimneys should either be sealed or waterproofed, which is different from sealing off—closing at both ends—a chimney. Waterproofing and sealing are both crucial steps to take to prevent water damage and the chimney leaking inside the house. While waterproofing is more comprehensive, both help safeguard your chimney, extending its life span and preventing expensive repairs.

Yes, it’s possible to install a wood-burning stove through the wall. The process is similar to venting the stove through the ceiling, but you’ll need to be careful of electrical wiring, plumbing, studs, and other potential obstructions in your walls. If you’re not comfortable with this type of work, call a professional who installs wood-burning stoves.

Pellet stoves are used as heat sources for homes. They work by burning biomass pallets, which might be composed of wood, sawdust, or food waste. The pellets are stored in the stove's hopper until the stove is ignited, at which point some are released into the stove's firebox to burn for heat. Unlike most fireplaces, pellet stoves have a thermostat that adjusts the temperature by releasing more or fewer pellets, depending on how warm you want to make your living space.

You can control the flame on a pellet stove by using a damper, often located on the back of the pellet stove. While the damper function varies by model, you can open the damper slightly to let in more air or close it slightly to provide less oxygen, with the ultimate goal of providing a steady flame.
