I tried to submit a review before but I did not see that it went through. Dennis gave me the best price out of 3 estimates I got. He actually took 25 percent off of the price because he said sone cancelled their job. He assured me that he was honest, trustworthy and reliable. I had told him I had been taken advantage of in the past. He started work right away. I told him I would not be there much that week due my work schedule so I only saw him coming or going. Everything seemed to be going well. I gave him half down to start work and then he did ask for a $500 advance to pay his worker, I thought that was odd but I wanted to help and he was working and I’m an understanding person. Work was completed relatively fast. There were delays due to weather. I did have to mention sone cracks bear my bay window that had not been repointed when he said they were done with that part but they did it the next day. The day they completed the work it was late after 8pm and I was not home. I got multiple phone calls and texts from him asking to get paid. I really wanted to see everything first but he said he had no money and was stuck at the gas station so I sent $800 thaf I had in my Venmo and said I would send the rest when I got home. It was dark when I got home but I realized that he had not done the middle of the crack in my block wall of my garage . He had done either side but the middle was covered by my mailbox which is plastic and removes very easily. I do not think he missed it on purpose. I told him and he assured me he would be there the next morning. So I foolishly trusted him and sent him the final payment of $700. He never showed up the next day. In the last 2 weeks he told me 7 times he would come do it and then would not show up. He wouldn’t call to reschedule he would just not coke. When asked family was sick or he was on his way. I even you’d him he had a few more days to fix it or I would report him and he still did not come finish the job.

Do Not Hire. Project abandoned and money stolen. The owner, Dennis showed responded to my initial phone call immediately and quickly came over to discuss the project - essentially turning an old gas fireplace into a wood-burning fireplace. Dennis was very nice, personable, and seemed to be excited to take on this project. He quickly submitted a quote for the full cost of the project which we discussed, made a couple changes and agreed to. After this, things started to turn. Dennis told me he would arrive Monday to start the project, but didn't show (or text or call) until well into the day. When we did talk, he said they would start tomorrow and they would arrive between 9 and 9:30. Dennis and his team did show, but not until 11:30 and they were gone again by 2:30, after taking a 2 hour break for lunch. This first week would become a common theme in my interactions with Dennis and his team, consistently showing up late and leaving early or not showing up at all. The project was initially estimated to take 5-7 days and after about a month, only 70 hours have been worked by the entire crew (Dennis, his foreman and a helper). They did not show up a single day when they promised to arrive, put in 7 "days" of work and had 14 days of no call, no show. I constantly called and texted Dennis to have an understanding of where the project stood and stay on the same page to no avail. Promises continued to be made and disregarded regularly. Dennis will likely argue that there were changes and unforeseen issues that came up in this project. And like most projects, this is true. However, I did discuss all changes with Dennis or his foreman (when Dennis started to ignore my calls) prior to approving a path forward. One such change is doing a herringbone pattern in the firebox instead of a stacked brick pattern - his foreman repeatedly told me this would "only take a few extra cuts" and would not significantly add time to the project. With regards to money, the initial quote provided seemed reasonable for the project ~$8,000. I was to pay for the facade tiles, mantle and hearthstone separately. I secured the tiles and mantle on my own. Dennis suggested he had a connection to get a piece of granite cut very quickly for $625 from Fox Chapel Stone. After giving the foreman the money, the hearthstone never arrived, even after multiple conversations and promises. In addition, I put down a down payment for half of the project and have not seen nearly half of the work completed. The relationship with Dennis ended with a streak of 8 no call, no shows. I called and texted multiple times every day so that we could come up with a plan to get the project completed. Dennis ignored most of them and a few times made promises to call me back "as soon as I get home", but never actually called. Regarding the quality of work, I would say it is adequate at best. I had to constantly check on the work and ensure bricks were level, the arch was symmetrical, firebox was being built with efficiency and flue draft in mind. Unfortunately, it seemed that the more I dug into their knowledge of custom fireplace fabrication, the more i realized they didn't follow any set of standards and instead relied on their gut. Again, Dennis and his employees were all very nice, but their work and communication styles are not suited to run a successful business.

"I'm going to.respond and be quick and to the point because I really have nothing bad to say about this customer ([Member Name Removed]) or any of my customers I have ever worked with. I have worked with A LOT OF PEOPLE over the past few years, and I can honestly say I have only had a couple situations end like this. I received half of the quoted price...which was around $3700, the day we started. We worked through several issues, but the thing that made things take a bad turn was the customer changed the design several times. I knew of the first couple changes, but the last change was going from laying the firebrick traditional to laying them in a herringbone design. He talked about it with my foreman and never ran it by me and my foreman didn't know. when I got there at the end of a full day of laying the firebrick this way, we couldn't turn back at that point. so an 8 hour firebrick install turned into 4 days which cost me almost $1500. The customer didn't see why I was upset by this. I pulled off a few days and every time I text the customer about getting back to it there was another call we would have to have when he was available and it kept ending like that. My tools and materials are still in his house and I'm trying to get them. I told him to come up with a reasonable number and I will give him some of the deposit back. I have heard nothing."

Terrible. You know that situation where you have work done on your house, and when you pay in full and the contractors leave and something does not feel right? That’s when you go to investigate and you find, to your dismay, that you've been taken advantage of by an unscrupulous business owner. That is our experience with Dennis, owner of 1st Choice Brick Pointing & Restoration. The work we paid to have performed was executed so poorly and incompletely that it cannot not be considered remotely done. We now have to hire another contractor to fix and complete the negligence left behind. We gave Dennis a contract to perform brick pointing, the most important being to grind out old mortar and repoint two chimneys on our house. For reasons I'll explain in a moment, we became suspicious that they did not do a good job, so a month later we asked another masonry contractor to go up on the roof to inspect their work. What we learned left us shocked and infuriated. Dennis had his workers completed only two out of eight sides of two chimneys that can be seen standing on the ground from across the street! The sides that you cannot see from ground level were at best hastily and shoddily treated, and at worst simply passed over. In other words, SIX out of EIGHT sides of the two chimneys are NOT complete and cannot be seen unless you go up on the roof. SEE IMAGE OF INVOICE THAT CLEARLY SHOWS CHARGE FOR TWO CHIMNEYS FROM ROOF TO THE TOP. We learned that old mortar was not properly ground out. New mortar was not filled in sufficiently. They left gaps between bricks that you can stick a trowel through. To top it off, they left huge open gaps at the top of the chimney that was supposed to cemented in, so large that you can stick your arm through the gap. No conscientious worker would do that. How could anyone knowingly and honestly do the one side you can see from street level and neglect to do the other three sides? The answer is: you cannot. This only happens when you intend to deceive the home owner, intending to charge premium pricing while getting away with the minimal amount of work possible. Here is why we became suspicious of Dennis. As part of the agreement I had asked to receive before-and-after photos of the chimney repairs. The workers finished in the late evening, and when Dennis arrived, instead of going up the ladder to inspect their work directly and take the agreed photos, I observed him scrutinizing the chimney from ground level. Now I know why that was his concern. I usually work from a checklist and walk around the house with the contractor looking to confirm the job. But by that time the sun had set and I couldn't do a proper walk-around. Rather than come back the next morning to do a proper inspection, Dennis pressured me to pay the remainder of the bill then and there. I took him on his word that the work was done. I wrote him a check to pay in full, and asked that he send me the pictures. He promised he would. As you can guess, he never did send me the photos, even after repeated requests. When I got him on the phone he always said he would send them at the end of the day. That never happened. Of course, sending the evidence of poor and absent workmanship would have blown his game. I hope by sharing how I got taken in others can avoid a similar fate. Dennis seemed trustworthy in person. But as my experience proves that is no guarantee. One of the main reasons I hired Dennis is because he won the Angie’s List "Super Service Award 2020" (I am writing this in October 2021). Sadly, Angie's Super Service Award is no guarantee of forthright business character either. Bad apples can still fool the rating and review system. I can only wonder how many past positive reviews would be retracted had the home owner had an independent masonry expert inspect Dennis’ “completed” work. In total, I paid $5,750.00. I want a refund so I can hire other professionals to fix the mess that Dennis left, and to complete the work that Dennis never finished. Three part invoice for total of $5750.00 (and pictures, if I am allowed to post them): 1] Point Chimney from roof to the top (2 chimneys) $4000.00. SEE IMAGE OF INVOICE A] From pictures, only one full side completed on the chimney visible from across the street. Pictures show that the vertical areas and the entire top (cap) have gaps (without mortar). In other words, 3 out of 4 sides only partially completed. SEE CHIMNEY IMAGES B] One of the pictures shows that a person can insert the entire hand/arm into the side of the unsealed cap – the side you cannot see from the street. This isn’t “accidental” – Dennis never intended for me to know he didn’t complete the work- that’s why he didn’t send the pictures to me. SEE IMAGE C] I learned that Dennis used portland (smooth) cement (“a rookie mistake”) that, only one month after Dennis “finished” there are cracks all along the top seam and a large vertical crack. SEE IMAGE WITH ARROWS ALONG CRACKS. 2] Spot point $1000.00 A] From pictures, there are deep crevices that should have been filled right next to mortar fill in work. SEE IMAGE OF GAPS LEFT IN MORTAR NEAR “WORK” BY DENNIS Very dubious that these areas needing mortar were simply “missed” given immediately next-to location where work was done. B] From pictures, the mortar is not smooth and, I’m told that, over time, rain water will more easily wear down this new mortar. Also, these pictures do not suggest, nor did I see, any use of a “striking iron” & brushing clean that was paid for. SEE IMAGE WITH FINGER & ARROW POINTING AT SLOPPY RIDGE IN MORTAR 3] Silka-flex perimeter of house $750.00 A] The other contractors actually re-sealed some of the areas done by Dennis- some areas the silka-flex was laid such that it already started to lift up within a month of sealing. The other contractors had already corrected a lot of Dennis’ silka-flex “work” so did not get photos. B] The other contractors are also using silka-flex to do gap filling on sides of house as they paint our house. I told them that we paid Dennis $750 – they told me, at most, Dennis would’ve needed 2, possible 3 full tubes to do the perimeter of our small house (1, 292 sq ft, two story) to do 1.5 hours to complete. These tubes cost only $18. For three tubes that is $54. This silka-flex “work” around the house seems a scam cost by Dennis to cheat owners out of money to do a job that should’ve cost only one-third the price. Do not do this “add-on” with Dennis. Ask someone you trust or do it yourself. 4] I suspect Dennis's team showed up late in the afternoon to ensure they finished after dark. I now think about punctuality - starting in the morning- is a red flag. Dennis pressured me to pay him "because it is unfair" to ask him to come back in daylight so I can see his work. I now know to say it is unfair that he asks me to pay him without seeing what I am paying for.

"We were contracted to point 1 chimney and spot point another. When we got on the roof, the chimney to be spot pointed was in such bad shape, I had my guys completely point that chimney as well...at no extra charge to the customer. I showed the customer the pictures we took which showed all 4 sides of both chimneys completely pointed. Customer paid with a smile and a thank you. Then, over a month later, I find out about this complaint. I don't understand. I tried calling and texting multiple times, leaving messages too, with no response. I'm not sure what you mean by showing up in the afternoon and finishing in the dark. who in there right mind would be on a 2 and a half story roof working on chimneys in the dark? I am blown away by everything that was said by customer because the entire time we were there working, her, I and my guys all had plenty of conversations. I have over thirty text messages between customer and I before the work began. She was calling me while I was on vacation with my family and workers asking me how soon we could start, and now is claiming I pressured her. I moved projects around to accommodate her, and after telling my guys about this, they were upset because they agreed that we worked very hard and did a lot of extras for customer. She came out and checked on our work numerous times and went on and on about how nice everything looked and how happy she was! I don't understand how someone's whole attitude and demeanor can change this much. I've experienced buyers remorse before when I spent a little more than I was supposed to on something...but I didn't blame Best Buy and say the Television wasn't nice...I blamed myself for spending more than I had to spend!"

Work done is very good. Excellent skilled workers. I would hire again. Professionalism of owner is lacking. He is nice, but he didnt show up for the first scheduled appointment and did not call to cancel. He called the next day to schedule. We hired him. The job took 3 days. The workers arrived 2-3 hours late on 2 of the 3 days, which would be okay and is understandable if they just called to let us know they would be late. I am still waiting for the owner to give me a receipt of the payment.

Dennis and his crew did a great job on relatively short notice taking care of a number of issues for me at a rental property. I was impressed with not only the quality of the work but with how quickly they were able to get it all done. Dennis was very accommodating throughout the process and I appreciated having his insight and experience to bounce ideas off of. Should I require additional masonry services, I'll definitely give him a call.

I had utilized the services of "1st Choice " last year to perform lentil replacement(s) and the resetting of window sill bricks. I was so impressed with their work I naturally contracted with them again to repoint the entire front of my house. The communication for this project between Dennis and myself was excellent. Because my mom was very sick and I was out of town I entrusted Dennis and his crew to perform the job without my presence. He kept me abreast of the job and like before I was elated with the quality of his team's work!! The completed project looks awesome almost as if I have a new house. My house is high up and has a projected vestibule as well as dormers which makes repointing work very challenging. Dennis and his crew were amazing. They washed the sutty brick, routed away the old mortar (every horizontal and vertical) and acid washed. It really has the appeal of a new house maintained with charm. I could not have been more pleased.

It went great. Dennis was very prompt getting back to me and was even able to fit our project in very quickly when a slot opened up on his schedule. The team was friendly and efficient and cleaned up after themselves. The work was done in a couple of days and we're very happy how it turned out. I'll be using them again the next time I need masonry work done.

1st choice did a great job with our chimney. We had a lot of damage to our fireplaces because the chimney vented our furnace and the previous owners never added a liner. The 1st Choice team was able to clear out part of the collapsed inner walls of the chimney, run a liner down to the furnace and block off the other two sections to prevent further damage. Everyone was very friendly, they had great prices, and they worked on a holiday weekend to get the work done. We were very pleased with their work.

Really happy with Dennis and his team. The curb appeal is definitely improved, and the creative problem-solving led to the perfect place for the French drain. We only repaired the two most damaged steps this time around, but we'll definitely be calling 1st Choice again for the rest of the repairs / repointing when we're ready. The best part is, we share the retaining wall with our neighbors, and they were a little anxious about the repair. They stopped by to see how it was going and were really impressed with the craftsmanship. Happy neighbors makes for a peaceful neighborhood! Thanks for everything - we'll be in touch.

Dennis and his crew are the best of the best when it comes to the category of work they do. I was very pleased in every aspect of the completed job. Old, rusted, steel lentils were removed and replaced with aesthetic limestone lentils. Window sill bricks were removed, cleaned and reset to have the proper slope insuring no future water damage. Cleanup was great and the overall project is eye-pleasing. The cost was in my opinion equitable. I highly recommend!!!

Dennis is a very friendly mason who does an excellent job. He tuckpointed the entire back face of our 19th century home. He was not the cheapest quote that we received for the project, but we chose him for his responsiveness and thoroughness. He also replaced two dozen sills and lintels on our windows with limestone from wood. His team worked very hard every day and completed the project within the timeline that we had arranged. They also left the worksite very clean at the end. When we had suggested a change at the end of the project, Dennis was very amenable to making that change without any change in the overall cost of the project. He also threw in a minor roof repair for a leak that we had while they were there for free. I will continue to use Dennis and his team as my first choice.

We have been dealing with Dennis since mid-April and we finally gave up in mid-June, after what was the worst experience we've had with a person during our remodeling project. We were looking to have two fireplaces remodeled and a new one built in our house. I was not sure if Dennis's crew could cover the full scope of work, which also required building a vent system for the new fireplace. Dennis reassured us that he had it all covered, and asked for $24,750 to do the job completely. After we agreed that we will cover the cost of stone separately, we agreed on $18,000 for the three fireplaces, and he asked for $9000 in down payment. The only good decision I made throughout this process was to ask that we break it down into three sub-projects, $6000 per fireplace, and have him finish one so we could see the work before we committed to the other two. We paid him a $3000 down payment to get started on the first fireplace. He built a wooden structure for the hearth and disappeared. He would not give us clear answers about what was to be done. He would write long texts telling us about his other jobs, making promises, etc., but no concrete plans. When we pressed, he complained that it was our fault for being unclear on what we wanted. We clearly said "a gas-burning B-vent fireplace", made a 3D model, and sent him examples of such fireplaces from the websites we could find. We also asked him to make suggestions if he didn't think we were being clear enough. No progress. Finally, we contacted others who had no trouble understanding what we were asking for, and telling us what needed to be done. My husband wanted to fire Dennis. I agreed that he shouldn't have made promises about work he wasn't able to do, but argued that he might do a good job if we restricted his scope of work to masonry. So we asked him to just remodel a fireplace that required no creative solutions. He expressed that he was relieved (why would he claim to be able to do a job he knew nothing about to begin with??), and promised that the new job would be a piece of cake for him. He raised the fireplace to the level of a wooden hearth he built and put two rows of firebrick in it. A few days later, the stone was ready. But he never showed again. It was now over two weeks that the stone had been sitting in the shop. When I pressed him, he texted that he's not comfortable working in a house with other people around. I was quite baffled, as we have the most understanding contractor, who had done everything humanly possible to help Dennis and his crew. They had done the demo for him, had drywalled all the surrounding area to make it easy for him, and had repeatedly offered to coordinate with him to clear out the space he needed to work. This contractor had done the same with the electrician, the window guy, the plumbers, the HVAC guys, and numerous other people who had worked in that house with him and no one had ever complained. So, I finally reached my limit with these nonsensical excuses. More than 2 months of wasted time and very little progress for $3000. I wrote to him that he could keep the down payment, but we are cutting our losses and going with someone who is responsible and capable of doing the job.

"[ Member Name Removed ]... I have never been given a.bad review... and honestly I have had nothing but good experiences with my customers to this point. I hope anyone who reads this can see through this review and look at the facts. How could a business have good review after good review after good review and then this. Not to be nasty, but.i tdd s obvious that some people are unable to be pleased. I too am not happy with how this job went and ended. The whole experience was odd from day 1. You are the only customer in all the years that I have been doing this that I never got to meet in person. I found that strange, and then you brought all the contractors in at the same time to get it done quicker and all it did was have workers in each others way. There were a few days I took a crew of guys to the property to basically get nothing done because we were working around carpenters, demo guys, electricians, plumbers and us. I had to pay my guys for that... even if nothing got accomplished and we had to pack up and leave early instead of standing around. And when I brought it to your attention you sent me a nasty text and said ok Dennis... let me kick everyone out just for you!! Everyone on the project on day 1 warn me and my guys of how hard you were to please and deal with. I should have taken there advice. You talked down to me quite a few times and that's not how you deal with people. I got $3,000 down from you, and trust me... between the material and labor, I spent more than that."

Dennis and his crew (Rege, Bill and Bill) were great. They arrived on Saturday and started the replacement of the six lintels (garage and windows). They ran into a problem with the bricks for the garage because some of them had several cracks in them and could not be reused. They were able to solve the problem by removing some bricks from my chimney. They also started work on the upper two bedroom window lintels. They had to come back Sunday to finish working on the replacement lintels on the second floor and front window and door and back bedroom window. There is a lot of work replacing lintels and I appreciate the fantastic job that they did. They also went around the house and sealed any cracks that were showing around the foundation of the house. The owner, Dennis, kept me apprised of what was happening both days. They cleaned up after they were finished. I will definitely hire them again if I need any additional chimney/masonry work.

It went great. Dennis took the time to investigate why the interior wall was crumbling and found issues which allowed water to penetrate inside of the same wall. In addition to pointing the interior blocks, he also pointed the outside and sealed areas where water was draining inside. So grateful for him and his work. Definitely will hire again if needed.

Fantastic. It was a pleasure to deal with 1st Choice. He came out quickly to give me a quote. He was very responsive when arranging a time to perform the work. The job was done quickly, professionally, and looks great. Though he was done quickly, he took the time to carefully match my mortar color, which is non-standard. I would definitely recommend to anyone needing pointing.

Dennis did everything he said he would. With some weather delays (as I expected), everything was completed in a timely fashion. I was kept in the loop at all stages and all communications/questions were professional and prompt. I would not hesitate to use 1st Choice again for any masonry work!
