"Nick from Milev construction was contracted to repair large hole in kitchen ceiling. The hole was the result of prior plumbing issue and needed to be re-drywalled. The work was done on Dec 3-4-2024. Nick did a fantastic job and I am very pleased with the results. I found Nick to be very professional and knowledgeable. To hide drywall edges, you need to properly apply drywall tape and multiple layers of joint compound. These materials hide the seams between drywall sheets and fill the holes from drywall screws, leaving behind a smooth, flat finish to paint over. Apply joint compound smoothly, and finish the job by sanding the walls to make sure you fully hide drywall edges and other imperfections.

Depending on the place where the cutting error occurred, you may be able to fix it. Learning how to patch a hole in drywall is challenging, but if you can tape and mud drywall, you can do it. Having said that, patching is time consuming. Early in the installation process, you may find that it’s easier and far less time consuming to just start over with a new sheet of drywall, cutting a new hole in the right spot. You may be able to use part of the incorrectly cut piece elsewhere, so it’s not completely wasted.

Drying alone can take 1 to 4 hours to dry to the touch per plaster layer, but some types of plaster take several hours longer to dry. However, this doesn’t mean the job is done because plaster doesn’t fully harden until it cures, which can take a few days to a couple of weeks. It may take even longer if you’re building a new, pretty thick plaster wall. Allow the plaster to cure before painting it.

In most cases, no, you won’t need a permit to replace drywall. If you’re changing the floorplan of your home by adding or removing walls during the drywall project, then you might need a permit, but replacement or repairs usually doesn’t require a permit. Your drywall professional should be able to confirm whether or not a permit is required for your project. If it is, it’s likely to add between $50 and $150 to your total cost. Keep in mind that you will need permits if you plan to install new electrical wiring or plumbing lines behind your new drywall.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.
