"Dr. Chimney knows his chimneys. And fireplaces. I have two monster fireplaces and one 30ft chimney and he looked at the chimney and said it's not code and doesn't have a crown and is wearing away at the top, and I said let's put one on, and he did, with the aid of his partner and 30ft scaffolding. It looks great and is guaranteed fifteen years. Then he cleaned my fireplaces, which is why he was originally called, and no one in twenty years has cleaned them so thoroughly, they look so good I hate to burn wood in them, but I will, as soon as the crown cures, that very moment we will have a cheery blaze. Dr. Chimney says we have now become part of the Dr. Chimney Family, and this is just to let him know we are proud to be members."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

You can build a fireplace on an existing house, but it’s much easier to construct a masonry fireplace when building a new house. To add to an existing house, you’ll need to build a chimney and ensure the foundation can support a true masonry fireplace. Alternatively, you can purchase a gas or electric fireplace insert, which isn’t as complicated to add to an existing structure.

A well-constructed and regularly maintained brick chimney can last 50 to 100 years, potentially spanning multiple generations of homeowners. The exact lifespan depends on the quality of construction, materials, local environment, and maintenance. In contrast, a metal chimney typically lasts 15 to 20 years. While the main structure is durable, individual components have shorter lifespans and require more frequent replacement. For example, mortar may need repointing every 20 to 30 years, chimney crowns last 50 to 75 years, and liners can last anywhere from 15 to 50 years depending on the material (e.g., stainless steel vs. cast-in-place).

The installation cost for a brick or stone gas fireplace typically ranges from $3,500 to $12,000. Key factors that influence the total expense include the type of material chosen, labor costs, the setup for the gas line, venting requirements, and any custom design elements.

Having a pellet stove can indeed raise your insurance rates since they're a relatively common cause of fires in the home. However, rate increases vary by insurance provider so you should reach out to yours to determine exactly how much your rates might increase with a new pellet stove install.

A chimney liner isn’t required for an outdoor fireplace; you don’t technically need one if the masonry chimney uses the proper dimensions and is built to code. However, a chimney liner does serve as a protective coating for the flue. Adding a liner could improve performance, safety, and durability. In short, while not necessary, it wouldn’t hurt.
