HVAC systems should be serviced annually, no matter which type of system you have. This service visit should include an inspection, cleaning, and regular maintenance tasks, like flushing the boiler. The best time to do this varies on the system. For heating-based systems, call in a technician sometime during the fall. For air conditioners, go for the spring. Basically, schedule the service call before you plan on amping up HVAC system usage for the season. 

Ductwork will occasionally make noise as the metal experiences rapid temperature or air pressure changes. This is especially common when the furnace initially kicks on and pushes warm air into cold air ducts. However, this noise should not occur if the home is at a normal temperature most of the time. If you are hearing noises regularly, it may be a sign of a more serious problem.

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.

Clean return air vents by using a microfiber cloth soaked in warm, soapy water (or a mild cleaning solution, like vinegar and water). Wipe the interior of the vents, paying close attention to the corners and crevices where dust likes to hide. Use a vacuum brush attachment or handheld model instead of a cloth if desired. Additionally, once or twice a year, remove your air vents and soak them in warm soapy water for 30 minutes before cleaning, drying, and putting them back on.

Smoke can be tricky to remove from your home, especially after a fire. The best way to eliminate the smell is to open the windows to increase ventilation and air circulation in your house. Then, use white vinegar to wipe down walls, furniture, and floors. Try steam-cleaning carpet and other upholstered items to remove the smell of smoke.
