Small jobs welcome

"I hired Mitch Mckague /Bend Labor Trade,to replace an old deck. He did such a fantastic job I asked him to do the other deck, next summer. I then asked him to replace a broken door on my garage, install a pre-made counter top in the bathroom, window and door frames through out the house. Build a fence into my garden area, cut down limb up and chip some small juniper trees. He also helped me stack 4 cords of wood and split some of the larger pieces. The latest project involved removing a old chicken shed, and cleaning out the lean to attached to the garage then putting clear corrugated around the sides. He is a very personable gentleman, keeps me informed on when he is arriving and the progress of the project. He is also willing to let me know if he cannot do one of my projects, and may know someone else who can. I will continue to hire him as long as I keep coming up with more projects."

"I have enjoyed working with Earth and Sky on my home projects to beautify my home! In working with them to give my porch a “face lift”, they listened to my ideas and created a nice addition to my porch. They went above and beyond and even reinforced my steps! Thanks"

"I had a client who wanted their window replaced with glass block. It is not a common installation these days but Demren was confident he was able to it and did it with a smile on his face. He was even graceful when there was a mishap with materials being delayed and came back to complete the work without a problem. The window looks great and both the client and I are very happy with the results. In most cases carpentry is one part skill and the other is being creative and intuitive in problem solving. Demren has no doubt an eye for detail and a very diverse set of skills. Highly recommended."

"Ian repaired an exterior door after someone broke into our garage. He did an excellent, efficient, and clean job. He also installed a deadbolt a security cam. This cold winter caused our door to swell. Ian came out and fixed it for no charge! I highly recommend Ian Douglas Custom Design!"

"Dan was awesome, I had a TON of post-divorce projects lying around the house; from demo, to junk removal, to installing a rooftop pop up, to putting together a chiminea! Super random things that needed pretty precise attention to detail and/or understanding for timeframe and rush and Dan knocked it all out in no time. He was super punctual and kind. Will definitely hire again!"

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $500 to $5,000, depending on fire alarms, sprinklers, and safety equipment.

Yes, windows being painted shut is a fire hazard. Because windows painted shut may have locks that stick or cannot be opened easily in an emergency, this becomes an immediate fire hazard that should be dealt with.

There are a few things you can look out for to ensure your chimney is safe to use. Check for the following issues:

  • Cracks or missing pieces in the masonry of the chimney

  • Creosote buildup in the chimney, which is a black, tar-like substance

  • Cracks, stains, or scorch marks in the firebox

  • Water stains in or around the fireplace

  • A broken or stuck damper

Your smoke detector might be too high in some homes or circumstances to reach yourself. If you feel unsafe getting on a ladder to replace your hardwired smoke detector, call a licensed electrician or local handyman to knock this project off your to-do list. If you have a battery-operated smoke detector, your local fire department can change the batteries or help you replace the detector—just make sure you call the non-emergency number.

In any case, do not let this project go unresolved, as it could turn into a huge safety issue.

As with any smoking appliance, a smoking oven is a concerning fire risk. It also negatively impacts your indoor air quality, which can put vulnerable people at risk of breathing problems. A dirty oven can catch fire if you don’t stay on top of regular maintenance, so remember to check your oven for signs that it’s time for a cleaning and remove buildup every three months to stay on the safe side.
