"Maintenance visit was a win. Props to Cam, the technician that just spent two hours checking out and tuning up the two heads and one outdoor unit at my house. I did my best to simply stay out of his way, and when all was done, he gave me a brief report and kind but professional answers to two of my own questions. His service included taking care of a small issue with one of the heads. The service cost me less than I had thought. That's likely my own confusion, but it made me happy nonetheless!"

"Jesus did a wonderful job. Our ducts hadn't been cleaned in forever; dirt and dust would fly constantly ever time the furnace came. Fast, efficient service. Excellent price, senior and veteran discount. Highly recommend this to anyone who is needing this service."

"Josh was easy to work with and very accommodating. He was quick to visit the worksite and provide an estimate. "My Heat Pump AC failed, and I called 2 other companies, and all they said was "you're on the list". Ron answered the call and came out, at the end of the day, and got my 20 year old system to at least work in AC mode. So, I asked about a replacement system, he gave me a price that was lower than some others, and arranged for financing, and came out and put in the system with 2 assistants. It is very well installed, much better insulated than the system we had and is very quiet and efficient. Airflow is much better than it was. Overall I strongly recommend Awesome as a repair service or for new install. They were very professional and reliable."

"Kevin Kelly was recommended to us by a larger local company who was booked up. We needed a whole furnace and air conditioner replacement, and he did a great job! He was very helpful through the insurance claim process and helping us pick out which units would be best for our house. Kevin is very professional and a super nice guy, and we will be using him for all of our HVAC needs."

"Randy, the gentleman servicing our AC, was amazing. Very kind and so quick. He found the issue almost immediately and explained it very simply and even showed me what was wrong. He then did some additional servicing and cleaning while he was working. To top off all the amazing service was the very reasonable price. It was super appreciated. Also, he was also able to get us scheduled and came out in less than a week. 10/10."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Here’s how AC professionals will clean your AC coils:

  1. Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.

  2. Remove the faceplate.

  3. Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

  4. Use a soft-bristled fin comb to remove stubborn caked-on debris.

  5. Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.

  6. Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

  7. Let the solution sit for at least 15 minutes.

  8. Gently wipe away loosened grime and debris with a microfiber cloth.

  9. Reattach the faceplate, plug in your AC system, or turn the breaker back on.

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.

Some HVAC systems tend to use R410A refrigerant, although if you have an older model it may be using R22. R22 is banned due to its harmful environmental and health impacts, and it is a sign that your AC unit is old enough to consider a replacement and the significant efficiency gains that could come with it.

There are ways to detect a refrigerant leak with several different testing methods. However, most homeowners can figure out something’s wrong with their AC unit by noticing these common signs:

  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

  • Water leaks near the AC unit

  • Frequent hissing sounds

  • Increased electric bills

  • Unit takes longer than usual to cool

  • Unit is blowing hot air
