".After our home was broken into in January 2014, I was motivated to install a security system. I asked my family about the services they use, and several people warned me about the small print in most contracts, and how tough it is to get out of contracts. Angie's List was running a special with Security One/Safe Home Security systems; they are highly rated, so I bought the special. I am very pleased with the level of customer service: they responded quickly via email or phone to all of my questions. Their technician guided me on the doors & windows to select for motion sensors. I am able to track disarming of the security pad by user via email, which means an email pops up whenever my kids come home/disarm the system. I am also able to track arming/disarming via their mobile app, or use the mobile app to arm/disarm the house. The monthly payment plan is affordable & there are no contract surprises/changes written in. They also guide me on things I would have forgotten, like registering my alarm system with the local police. I appreciate their guidance and service.

"Great! George, the technician was on time, a great guy to be around, thorough, responsive and I was very comfortable having him in my home for a few hours. The service works great, he showed us how to use every feature. The system works just as expected and when we've called in for questions or assistance, the call center is courteous and well informed.

"About 4 years ago I need my home protected by something other than my dog while I was not home looking for a job. I needed something affordable, simple to use and install my self as my house was not prewired. I found Protect America and it had all I needed and more. Over the years I have added to my system more sensors, motion detectors, camera's, carbon monoxide sensor, and monitored smoke detectors. All of it was simple enough to do with some help with their Installation Technician walking me though everything on the phone. I have had other companies try to get me to switch to them, but what I have works and they could not beat the price so I told them no thanks."

Home Automation questions, answered by experts

Yes, removing a fireplace can decrease your home's value, as it is a sought-after feature for many buyers. The potential loss in value is estimated to be between $1,000 and $5,000. The impact can vary by market and climate; for example, a fireplace is more valued in colder regions like Minnesota than in warmer areas like Florida.

However, if a fireplace is in poor condition and needs extensive repairs, removing it might be a reasonable option. When deciding, weigh the benefits of removal (more floor space, less maintenance, reduced energy loss) against the potential decrease in home value. If you plan to sell soon, it is generally advised not to remove it.

To stage your home yourself, clean your home thoroughly to sell, leaving it gleaming like a five-star hotel. Less is best—always clear away clutter and anything personal so buyers can focus on the beauty of the rooms. Prospective buyers will check the closets, so investing in a storage space may be necessary.

Move furniture around, mix fabrics and decor, and de-cramp the room by removing any unnecessary furniture. A fresh coat of paint always helps, as do natural features like plants.

Choosing a high-quality home stager can mean the difference between your home flying off the shelves or sitting on the market for weeks or months, and it all starts with verifying the stager’s experience. You can start by asking how long the professional has been in the business, and you should also ask for references and examples of past work in your particular area. Ask the stager about your options, including virtual staging, furniture rental, and other preparation services.

In most cases, selling a home in as-is condition will lead to a sale price that’s somewhere between 10% and 30% lower than normal. However, it’s often worthwhile to sell at a loss because the alternative would be to pay for the repairs yourself, which could end up costing you more. Even if they didn’t, selling as-is saves you from the time and energy you’d spend coordinating the repairs.

The main factors to consider when staging your home when selling are your budget, number of rooms to stage, and how long to keep the staged setup. Since home staging costs about $600 per room when using professional services, you may want to only stage the rooms that are most important to potential buyers, including the kitchen, living room, and primary bedroom. You should also consider which repairs or updates are necessary before staging your home, such as painting interior walls, carpet cleaning, and refinishing hardwood floors.
