"Josh Rutledge promised and delivered high quality work installing Z-style flashing on about 30 locations for residential windows and doors, identified and replaced deteriorated wood frame sections, repaired a door jamb damaged by weather and installed 2 high quality Andersen storm doors. Impressively, he maintained regular and complete communications with us during this project and met each and every milestone that we jointly established. He is an exceptional and highly professional contractor who delivered the highest work that met his meticulous personal standards. I am a retired naval officer and he impressed me with his dedication and quality of work. Five stars!!!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

There are a few different reasons why shotgun houses have two separate front doors. Shotgun homes with two front doors are also called double shotgun homes, which can be two individual homes that share a wall. Other reasons include improved ventilation throughout the home and better access to other rooms.

Permits are required when carrying out any structural work, so in most cases, you will need a building permit to cut through a concrete block wall to install a door. If you have specific questions about your project or need to obtain a permit, contact your municipal building department or ask your contractor for advice.

A door swells up when there’s a lot of moisture in the air. Wood doors are porous, and the elements can cause them to expand with humidity and contract with dry air. Prevent swelling by coating the door in weather-resistant paint, which creates a barrier to seal out moisture. Otherwise, go with a water-repellent finish after the fact. On the plus side, this problem will go away once the weather changes.

If you’re installing a pocket door into an existing door opening, the new space will need to be twice the width of the existing door, plus an inch. You'll need to double that number if you’re adding dual pocket doors.

Most modern, standard doors are 1 ⅜-inches thick, so you should aim for this thickness unless you're building a door to replace an antique door or fit into a non-standard wall opening. Thickness varies when installing a pocket door or sliding barn door, so a good rule of thumb is to measure your existing door, if possible. For standard doors, you can also measure from the inside of the door to the door stop to gauge the proper thickness.
