"

I got home last evening at 8:30pm and wanted to walk around my house and admire my new roof.  I no sooner stepped out of my car and took a couple steps and saw that the place in the driveway where the workers had their materials still had debris (small pieces of wood, shingles, and even a couple nails) in the driveway.  I walked around the house ? at dusk, and even in that low level of light yet laying in plain sight ? I found 17 more nails and/or staples.  I will inspect the beds and yard more closely in day-light this weekend for additional nails and staples.  Ron Stewart told me Dabella?s roofing crews use a magnet when a job is completed to search for pick-up stray nails but perhaps they didn?t have it with them.  My DISH antenna is still laying on the ground and not affixed to the new roof as I was told would be done.  There is plastic remnants from shingle bundle wrappers in my bushes.  I truly hope the rain gutters and down spouts are clean as this weekend I will run a hose and flush with water to insure they flow freely. The workers did use a rake in attempt to clean-up because they also took up much of the bark dusk I had put down just a month ago is gone and hopefully no nails/staples are buried in the mulch/dirt that remains.  I found a yellow recycle bin (not mine) in back yard laying on top of a fern (now ruined) and a few other plants were mangled and a small rose bush were trampled - probably from when the workers were dragging tarps loaded with old roof and wood through the yard to front dumpster or when old roofing thrown to the ground.  Grass is finally growing back where workers would keep putting ladders and other equipment and the recycle bin - they had a microwave in my yard.  There are several scrapes and gouges on decking and porch railings due to materials being dragged over them.  Plywood (which I assume has since been installed on my roof) was initially laid to protect a front deck and the tiger paw sheeting was eventually draped over railing.  Within first couple weeks after roof completion I easily found a zip lock sandwich bag of nails just laying on the ground and on surrounding walks/decks and am occasionally still finding errant roofing nails.

The workers arrived at my house Tuesday, 17 June and during the course of their seven working days (they rested on Sunday, thank goodness), they did work from about 8am until 7-730pm every day.  I could communicate only minimally with one of them who spoke very broken English and the extent of his communication was that ?need to call boss to authorize paying for more work and replacing of wood? (sic).  Kyle Adamson did leave two messages on my home answering machine asking that I call him ? which I did return his calls, however, each time I called he was in a meeting so I could only leave messages on his voice mail, I never heard back from Kyle until the day before the job was completed.  I was out of town for three days and the ?leader? (broken English gentleman) told another person staying at my house the same thing and that his boss was going to stop by Saturday afternoon to discuss the job and how I was going to pay for additional work (sic) ? well, my house sitter never left ? expecting ?the boss? (el hefe), who never showed nor called.  In the quote for the roofing project, sales rep Ron Stewart did include tear-off and replacement of lots of old/rotted wood yet project manager Kyle apparently was not aware of this until . . . . . who knows when.

Left hand doesn?t know about the Right and those who actually did the job, I could not communicate with the actual roofing workers ? they spoke only Spanish ? which, to be truthful, I expected more after sitting through Ron?s sale presentation where he stated their company is proud of their customer service and communications; I don?t know if a supervisor ever visited the job site while I was at work or away,  but I do know that - other than Kyle?s calls to my house requesting I return his call to unnecessarily discuss payment arrangements for included work ? I was never contacted or asked by anyone how the project was going.

I also had scheduled ? and paid for ? a garage door to be replaced by Debella; three weeks after roof project finished I called DeBella to inquire status of garage door - I must mention that all communications had to be initiated by me as no DaBella personnel contacted us to offer updates, inform about delays, etc.  Regarding garage door - I found out it was "sub'd" out to a different (non-DaBella) contractor and the door was never initially ordered until I called to follow-up.

Interesting side note - during each call I made to DeBella office, when placed on-hold by receptionist, is the recorded voice of company owner, Nissa McMillan and the explanation about how DaBella got it's name.  I believed the sales rep's and Mrs. McMillan's claims regarding company attention to detail, being mindful of watching out for private property, not damaging landscape plants, clean-up after roof installation, etc; installation of new roofing looks good (I'm no expert), however, being mindful of my property, plants and clean-up certainly leave a lot to be desired as well as communications and follow-through could definitely be improved.

Greenhouses and Nurseries questions, answered by experts

The quickest way you can protect plants and trees from frost is to cover them with garden blankets or frost cloths. Also, bringing potted plants or trees indoors is much simpler than trying to cover and protect them outdoors. Remember to anchor blankets with something such as sandbags, fabric pins, or rocks if the forecast calls for strong winds to keep them from blowing away and exposing your trees and plants.

In most cases, wait three to five days to repot or relocate a plant from a greenhouse or nursery. That way, your plant has time to recover from any shock during the move and adapt to the conditions in and around your home. Some hearty plants may not need as long, and delicate plants might need several weeks. You should ask the professional at your nursery for a recommended timeline. Consider asking about an initial watering schedule to help stimulate root growth and promote a healthy plant.

Adding burnt charcoal to your garden beds and plant pots can yield several benefits, but there are risks involved, too. Charcoal, particularly biochar, can enhance soil structure, improve water drainage, and increase nutrient retention. When activated, charcoal provides key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, burnt charcoal, especially from briquettes, can inadvertently alter soil's pH levels and become hazardous to plants. Overall, there are better and less risky soil amendments available, such as vermiculite, perlite, or wood chips.

Eco-friendly materials include sustainably-sourced woods, recycled metals, low-VOC paints, and non-toxic sealants, which reduce environmental impact. Using these in repairs promotes sustainability and can improve indoor air quality and overall building health.

Minor fixes like patching leaks or repainting are DIY-friendly, but structural repairs require professional expertise.
