"This great team connected a 1921 home in North Portland to city sewer for the first time. They also had to decommission FOUR cesspools on the property -- one from ~1961, plus three more ancient ones. Their cleanup after the job was great, and they even threw down grass seed over the dig sites. The $18,310 price tag, though a big chunk, seems reasonable for the amount of work that had to be done, and the approx three days the crew spent in November downpour conditions."

"Danny came quickly, on very short notice. My sewer was backing up into my shower. He diagnosed the problem. Charges were very fair. I will be having him return in a year to recheck. Thank you , Danny. Sorry I was so slow to post this!"

"William did a great job in our home. He replaced 2 faucets and installed 3 valves in couple of hours. Made sure to explain what he was doing and what he was charging for-that transparency for me accounts for a lot. He is kind, professional, and honest."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

The first step to clearing the air in a line is to locate the cause. This is usually a blockage in either the drain or the venting system. Once you clear the issue, flush the system by actually flushing the toilets repeatedly. This should allow the trapped air to escape, thus clearing the lines. Don’t be surprised if there is increased bubbling as the air makes its way through the system.

If you notice water leaking down the side of the bowl or tank and you don’t notice any cracks in the porcelain, the odds are that it’s condensation. If you notice water around the base of the toilet, this points to a leak. Check for loose bolts. A sewage odor may also indicate a broken toilet flange.

Toilets typically connect to your main vent stack, a vertical pipe that runs through all finished levels of your home and exits through the roof. It’s located behind the walls, but if you have an unfinished basement or a utility closet, you may find a portion of it running the vertical length of the space. Some basement toilets use an air admittance valve instead, which is a small vent located in the wall directly behind the toilet that extends upward a few feet from the drain.

Some of the problems with in-wall toilets include the complex installation, which might need extra framing. It is also more difficult to access the toilet tank for maintenance or troubleshooting because it’s behind the flush button panel and in the wall. Over time, you’ll spend more on maintenance because you’ll need a plumber to work on hidden plumbing.

Yes, you can pour water down the toilet to help it flush. For each flush, you’ll need 1 to 2 gallons of water for newer toilets or 3 to 5 gallons of water for older toilets. Rather than dumping the entire bucket in all at once, pour the water in slowly for the best results. If you’re pouring water down the toilet to help it flush after a clog, only use 1 gallon of hot water.
