"My next door neighbor's house was robbed last week, and I realized that I needed to do something to give me further peace of mind. Purchased new home security with ADT and opted to get the premium options with flood detection and carbon dioxide monitoring. Keep up the nice job ADT!"

"Working with FrontPoint has been extremely easy. They were not pushy at all on the initial sales call and were very helpful in customizing a security system to meet our needs. We called their support multiple times in the 3 weeks since purchasing the system for a variety of questions about the equipment. There was never a wait - we always had a person on the phone within a minute of calling in. They were extremely helpful and were able to resolve all of our issues, including swapping some of the sensors we ordered to better meet our needs. I would recommend FrontPoint to anyone that's looking for a home security system."

"The job went very smoothly. The tech ran a bit late, but he called to say so. He installed a keypad by the front door and assessed the house for security. He suggested, since there are several casement windows in the living room and adjoining dining room that a breaking glass sensor would work better and be more cost-effective than alarming all the windows. He did alarm a door that the previous company (inherited when we bought the house twenty-three years ago) had not considered significant. I feel safer with the current sensor choices than the ones I had before.
He took the time to make sure I knew how to use the system, so I am very pleased with the service. My one caveat: I was told that the motion sensor would not register my smaller pets (two cats) because they weigh under forty pounds. They must have set off the sensor, though, because the police responded. The system certainly alerts the authorities, but that motion sensor is very sensitive!

"Johnathan called before coming on appointment and arrived right on time. He found a few problems with the door closure (space at top) and adjusted the door to fit without open space (I work in the garage so heating is critical in the Winter). Work was completed quickly and tips were given on how to check the door for problems. Very professional and easy to work/talk with."

""What struck me most about Chris was his patience along with his professionalism. I had never used a private detective before and was a little nervous, but he took the time to answer all my questions and explain the process. He was extremely accessible and kept me updated on my case. If you want someone who is professional, courteous, thorough, and who gets the job done right, I highly recommend Chris and CSI Secure Solutions.""

"Initially, I was loathe to install a home security system, but there's enough low-level petty crime in my neighborhood to make me change my mind. You can buy systems and install them yourself, but I am not a DIY-er. Omniguard handles all the install and they're a local company. Plus I had them swap out some of our smoke detectors that always go off when we're cooking. These may also go off, but at least I can "hush" them with the control panel instead of standing on a chair trying to reach the hush button. Monthly cost is $49/mo. So far so good. I have set it off a few times by accident (opening a door after I armed the system), but it's easily disarmed. Also, these systems are mostly wireless now, so installation is less intrusive.

"That's the name I am vaguely familiar with; it's a home security company that is license to ADT franchise or dealer if I am correct.  They were very good.  They were prompt; they were quality.  The individuals move their business.  They were very timely and it was a good experience."

"The trades people were talented, punctual, respectful of our house and property; personable; and professional.  They also when well out of their way to look out for us.  There was NO DAMAGE to the existing hardwood floor.  There were many instances where we noted little things that all the trades people did to minimize dust and disruption (e.g. keeping the workplace reasonably clean as the worked and before they would leave every night).

Story of dedication and determination - The fridge: Early on (upon Peter's advice) we determined that we would move the old fridge into the dining room which would be our temporary kitchen.  Normally this would have easily fit through the front foyer. However, a large aquarium was now blocking the easy route.  Peter's crew (Josh) dismantled the Fridge doors and "extruded it" (literally). through the dinning room doorway (which ordinarily would not have been able to accommodate something as large as the Fridge).  We knew that damage to the doorway would be inevitable but also that it would be fixed.  I was amazed that it worked and now I have some appreciation for what it would be like to squeeze a refrigerator through a tooth paste tube.

  • Dos and Don'ts: The electric circuit for the dinning room is the same as the kitchen.  Power needs to be cut in the kitchen during demolition and at other times.  Upon realizing this we simply powered the fridge with an extension cord plugged into a different circuit.

The whole crew did an excellent job in handling the anxious moments that sometimes arise when you think something may not work out as well as you intended.  For example there were a couple of times when we ask that some aspect of the work be held while we considered if we had made the right decision.  No one ever expressed any inkling of frustration or anxiety about the potential for disruption (although everyone - including my wife and me - were acutely aware of staying on schedule). Peter and Ivy listened (no trying to talk us into the easy route or what they wanted).  They were extremely patient and helpful. Usually we confirmed the original decision was the right one and never experienced any delay due to their quick response.

In conclusion we were extremely pleased with the work and highly recommend Pacific NW Cabinetry."

Security Doors FAQs, answered by experts

Grounding is a great first step to prevent electrical shock, but you can take it further with GFCI outlets and AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters). In particular, AFCIs help protect against the type of electrical arcs that cause fires, like if a mouse chews on a wire or your laptop starts overheating at the wall. These are required in some areas of your home.

A study from the University of North Carolina found that security system signs were one of the top ten deterrents for burglars when choosing a target, so they do have some effect. However, you can get into legal trouble for putting up fake signage, so it’s best only to put up signs when you have the alarms to back them up.

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

There are several strategic ways to lower your home insurance premium. The primary one is to shop around and get quotes every few years to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Also, sometimes bundling your auto and homeowner’s insurance will get you a discount on both. Finally, try to keep your credit score up; many homeowner insurance companies use credit scores to generate quotes.

Expect to spend an average of $150 to $500 to set up a home flood detection system. However, be aware that costs are wide-ranging. You might only spend a budget-friendly $50 to place basic, battery-operated sensors in a few key areas of your home, or $150 to set up two or three smart sensors. The purchase and professional installation of a whole-home protection system with water shutoff capabilities could cost between $500 and $1,000.
