"Tom did a fabulous job with the whole house plug installation for my back up generator. He was quick and efficient and cleaned up well after the work. He explained how to use the plug and manual interlock and made sure everything worked before leaving. Quality job on all fronts. Pricing was fair and he was able to fit me in on short notice due to another job rescheduling. I will definitely contact him again should the need arise."

"We needed a 240V (level 2) EV charger installed in our garage. Our contractor friend highly recommended Charles. Charles looked at our current electrical panel which is almost 40 years old and had no space to add new circuits. He recommended we replace the panel with a larger one and promptly provided an estimate. We also asked Charles to install a generator inlet connection and an interlock switch for the panel so that the EV battery can be used to provide backup power in case of a power outage. Once we approved the project, Charles gave us a time and duration and he got the job done on schedule. He came back again to rearrange some circuits in the panel so that the EV battery can provide power to the important functions in the house such as kitchen, refrigerator, furnace, den, etc. Overall, we are very pleased with the work done by Charles and we have no hesitation in recommending him."

"Ideal experience with this company! They contacted me and came out to make the bid the same day I contacted them. They were super flexible and worked to accommodate my schedule. I needed to wait until my EV charger arrived from the manufacturer. They came out the day after it arrived, installed the unit in under two hours, and it's been working flawlessly ever since. Don't let their name fool you--John's Waterproofing is expert at electrical work! I will use them again."

"I couldn't have asked for a better service person. Alex came for consultation on my electric hot water heater replacement. He quickly diagnosed and fixed the problem and told me my water heater is fine. He is a true professional. He was very kind, pleasant and courteous, and gave me useful information about water heaters and installation issues in general. When my 10-year-old water heater quits for good, I know where to go. Thank you for the great work!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.
