"Our existing septic tank was only a few years old, but the associated drainfield was failing and required replacement. Due to a small lot, our options were limited; but rather than a huge and unsightly bottomless sand filter, we opted for a less obtrusive (but expensive) treatment unit and pumps along with the needed replaced drainfield. Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Gently insert a plumbing snake down into the pipe, move it back and forth, and pull it out. Remove any hair, debris, and soap scum that comes out with it. Repeat the process until the snake comes out clean, and then reinstall the cap on your overflow valve.

Pouring drain cleaner down a vent pipe isn’t recommended. First of all, unlike a clog in a sink or bath caused by such material as soap scum build-up, toothpaste, and hair, clogs in a vent pipe are likely the result of debris from trees or even an animal stuck in the pipe. Drain cleaners won’t be able to eat through this kind of material. The cleaner will only become clogged in the vent with the debris, causing even more problems.

Flushing the toilet only to realize it’s clogged can cause anxiety. To avoid a clogged toilet, use less toilet paper. If you notice that the toilet is flushing and refilling slower than usual, you can use a plunger to clear clogs in the S-trap.
