"The project is about 50% complete at this time and we can’t say enough about our wonderful experience with Jackson Construction (Dorson Jackson). This is our first experience with new construction and/or remodeling. Dorson has guided us through planning our project to meet our “vision”. HIs vast knowledge and experience has been so valuable to us and we are so happy we chose him as our general contractor. I will review further upon completion of our project. So far we are quite pleased with Dorson, as well as all of the trade subcontractors he hired. I am excited to write a more thorough review soon. You can’t go wrong with Jackson Construction!"

"I could not be happier than I am with these guys! Rob and Roy were (a) always on time; (b) did exactly what they said they would do; (c) kindly addressed a couple of other minor fix-it issues that I had; and (d) were just great people to work with! The new walkway looks very nice."

"Mr Huff was very responsive, worked with us on choosing a design & materials and went above and beyond by coming over and showing samples. He was very good with communicating when he'd be over, the cost of materials, etc. And he held up to his commitments. I would be more than happy to have him do another project for us again"

"We just had Triple D Construction re-side our home. It was a pleasure dealing with people who were not only very personable, but highly professional as well. Owner Paul DeRosia and his employee Ryan, were meticulous in their work from start to finish and completed the job on time. All this, AND a fair price! This fall/winter we are remodeling our bathroom, and it feels great knowing we have found someone we trust to do the job and to do it right."

Customers say: True professional

"Well, it all went down this way....Miguel came to do the roof tear-off and replacement estimate. He was punctual and extremely knowledgeable and DIDN'T attempt to sell us enhancements we didn't need nor want. The agreed price was substantially less and had a much better and longer warranty than the other four bids I received from other highly rated Angie contractors. Cesar and crew were all on time and worked their butts off! I don't remember seeing any of them not working! They were very careful not to damage any shrubberies (previously purchased from and installed by Roger the Shrubber). They finished the roof in a day and a half and did a fantastic job of cleaning up. The roof looks great! Miguel then came by again for a final inspection and found a few things that he didn't think were up to their standards (none of which I would have noticed: my wife was able to spot an unsightly yellow sticker on a piece of flashing). He came back twice to correct everything to his and company standards including the yellow sticker removal. You should definitely hire these guys if you're looking for a phenomenal, honest, and hard working contractor!! If you do please provide ice cold bottled water as roofing is hot, tiring work. The guys were very appreciative as I am with the job they did."

"I was recommended to Chumbley Construction by a trust worthy friend when I had been looking for companies. After the original consultation I knew I made the right choice. The quote I got was extremely fair and my expectations were met above and beyond. Especially after I saw all the work done for such a great cost. Top of the line material, in my budget and done in a timely fashion. They always communicated everything with me while making everything precise and perfect. I would recommend them to anyone and get so many compliments when family and friends come over. I couldn’t ask for more."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Building involves setting foundation posts, framing with durable wood, adding roofing support, and protecting from elements with water-resistant finishes.
