"Went well, I called and they made an appointment in 2 days. Didn’t have a time when they would be there, but as requested they called before they arrived. They found tank and got to work right away. Determined I needed a new t-pipe (or something) and offered to come back later that same evening to finish the job. The technician was really nice and got right to work and finished the job. Not sure if price was right or not, I didn’t shop around much but seemed fair."

"Martin is very customer oriented, professional and friendly. I called him mid-afternoon (on a weekday) with a septic system alarm. He was able to come to our home late that afternoon after he finished with another client. He diagnosed the problem, and made the repairs. I feel his pricing was very fair. I will continue to use him for my septic system maintenance and repairs, and I will recommend him to others who ask."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

A submersible pump should be at least 10 feet from the bottom of the well to minimize the risk of the pump drawing debris into the well water. Submersible pumps work best for wells that are 25 feet deep or less. If you have a deeper well, choose a jet pump instead of a submersible model.

A household of four can easily fill a 1,000-gallon septic tank within a week. It may be 10 to 14 days for smaller households. But the reason why you don't need weekly pumping is because the tank's contents eventually reach the overflow pipe. They flow down this pipe to the absorption area whenever water is used in your home. The tank keeps working at this full level until it's pumped again.

There are three layers of wastewater in a septic tank: scum (solid waste that floats to the top of the wastewater), liquid (the relatively clean liquid wastewater in between the two other layers), and sludge (solid waste that falls to the bottom of the wastewater). The buildup of sludge is one of the main reasons septic tanks need to be pumped. If the tank is more than 1/3 of the way full with a combination of sludge and scum, it’s time to call a pro for pumping.

Both materials are suitable for septic tanks, but concrete usually lasts longer than plastic. If you’re buying a new tank, the prices are similar for plastic ($500 to $2,500) and concrete ($700 to $2,000). However, there’s a notable difference in repair prices, with plastic tank repair costs ranging from $150 to $2,000, while concrete repairs are between $700 and $5,000.

While homeowners connected to a municipal sewer line still have to keep up with plumbing maintenance, the downside to a septic system is that all the maintenance falls on the homeowners. Not calling in a pro to pump the tank every few years or accidentally flushing or draining the wrong types of materials can quickly cause clogs, which can back up into drains around the home.
