"I originally started with looking at concrete platform steps which needed footers that proved too expensive. The House Doctors provided me with alternate options using treated lumber and backfilling with gravel. I am very grateful to Seth and Mike for working with me to understand the challenges, come up with alternate solutions, and work within my budget. An excellent solution that ended up saving me $5000.00"

"Chris was extremely professional and very skilled at his trade. He completed the work within 2 days of our first contact and kept excellent communication about costs, time of arrival for first consultation and date of service. The projects were challenging and he did incredible carpentry. He was very good at keeping the area clean and respectful of my home. We have already discussed additional work that he will do on the house. I am excited to work with him again and recommend him without reservation. He is a breath of fresh air for someone to really work with a homeowner!"

"Could not be happier. Kris went above and beyond my expectations. My bathroom had to be gutted and redone from top to bottom. He was done in the time frame I was given. Very accurate. Very personable and just a genuine man. I will have him back for other rooms in the future."

"We worked with John Desborough (Desborough Construction) to finish our basement, including building a custom wood bar with plumbing and cabinetry, a matching wooded booth, and a half bathroom. This was a big project and it was important to us that the work was done right, so we interviewed three contractors. John stood apart from the competition. He spent a significant amount of time speaking with us to understand our goals, and offered suggestions and advice on how to accomplish our vision and improve our design. John’s proposal contained significant detail compared to others. We selected him because it was clear that John understood our goals and was capable of getting the work done right and within budget. We understood exactly what was included in the scope of work and knew there would be no surprises. John did a great job of communicating throughout the project and there were no unanticipated delays. He and the Desborough Construction team worked quickly and kept the project on track. John clearly takes a great deal of pride in his work. For example, although we didn’t specify that the bar top had to be one solid piece of wood, John knew that the bar was important to us and that a solid top would look best. To accommodate the lengthy bar top (which was constructed off-site), John cut a hole in the drywall of the basement stairway in order to get it safely down the stairs, installed the bar, and repaired the drywall during the same day. We couldn’t tell it had ever happened! Throughout the project, John went the extra mile to ensure that our expectations were exceeded and that we were extremely happy with the finished product. We feel lucky to have found Desborough Construction and John will be our first call for any future home improvement projects."

"We have a property that has a small concrete patio that eventually will need replacing. About 2 yrs ago, my husband had fixed a few cracks but did not have time to address the issue this time as we had other projects going on. In this case I had hoped to take some of the workload off my husband and hired Neatniks.
About the time he was scheduled to arrive, he phoned to say he was running late. He did arrive considerably later then anticpated and left sooner than what we had agreed upon via phone (hrs work and cost per Angies list) but that was not the biggest concern. It was a Friday and I get things happen and people can run behind so long as in the end, our work is not negatively impacted.
He is a very nice man but his level of expertise was just not there for what was needed. After using something similar to a dremel to clean out the cracks to make the repair neater, he did not realize that he needed to use another material (I believe it's called a backer rod) to keep the concrete patch from running through, thus using way too many tubes for the areas @$12/tube. He did offer to come back another time to finish, but it was clear he did not get why this was consuming so many tubes of patch.
After seeing the bill and the unfinished job, my husband found time to get the backer rod in place 1st, then used the tubed concrete patch....so honestly, as nice as the man is, we would not have him back for home repairs. I thought he knew what he was doing and clearly should have figured out the cracks were not holding the material in before wasting so many tubes at our expense.
Not worth having to repair someone else's repair work.
I feel bad having to write this as I am sure by the other reviews I had read about him doing other projects he is well qualified for and again, very nice man, but just not knowledgeable for this type of repair.

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.
