"I estimate I have just under $100k in electronics and appliances in my house. We have significant lightning storms in my location. To NOT have lightning suppression installed is significant risk in my mind based on my location in New Jersey. RS LIGHTNING PROTECTION was responsive with a quick cost estimate and a reasonable price based on my research for installation. By the way...installation is part art, such as bends in cable are not more than 90 degrees. It's not just about running grounded cables. This installation in conjunction with surge protection on my electrical panel performed by my electrician and cable protection gives me significant piece of mind that all my appliances and electronics are protected from lightning and any potential surge generated by a near strike. Mr Richard Sherlock knows his subject. Highly recommended. Five stars."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

For electrical projects in Troy, keep a non-contact voltage tester, digital multimeter, wire strippers, insulated screwdrivers, and electrical tape designed for local weather. Stock wire nuts, GFCI outlet testers, surge protectors, weatherproof electrical boxes, and outdoor-rated extension cords. Having replacement outlets, Romex wire, and compatible circuit breakers helps you handle Troy’s freeze-thaw cycles and unexpected Midwest storms efficiently.

Helpful?

In Troy, frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or outlets that feel warm often indicate electrical issues. If a single appliance causes problems, test it in another outlet to rule out electrical faults. For concerns involving your main electrical panel or new wiring, permits are required locally. Always distinguish between electrical, HVAC, or plumbing issues before starting repairs to ensure the right solution.

Helpful?

When planning electrical projects in Troy, consider permit requirements, inspection needs, and the impact of frequent storms. Neighborhoods may have underground or overhead utilities, which can affect project planning. Spring and fall are ideal for installations due to milder weather. If your home is historic, take extra care with updates. Emergency preparedness, including surge protectors and generator options, is especially important in Troy.

Helpful?

In Troy, you can safely replace outlets, switches, or light fixtures by turning off the breaker and confirming with a voltage tester. Use insulated tools, wear safety glasses, and never work in damp conditions. If your home has older or aluminum wiring, take extra care. Stop immediately and contact a professional if you notice sparking, burning odors, or are unsure about the wiring setup.

Helpful?

The longevity of electrical work in Troy depends on using weather-resistant materials, following current electrical codes, and ensuring proper grounding. Copper wiring, surge protection, and quality connections are essential for withstanding Troy’s humidity and freeze-thaw cycles. Homes built before the 1980s may require upgrades for safety. Professional installation and regular inspections help electrical systems perform reliably over time.
