"We contracted Winthrop Place for a remodeling job that included converting an extra room into an additional bathroom & converting the adjoining room into a bedroom (adding a closet, new doorway and framing the existing doorway) for my elderly mom. Michael and crew did a fantastic job. They were very professional and completed the work in a short time frame, making the house much more accessible for my mom. They took care to preserve and re-use the house's original wood trim/moulding so the new rooms tie in perfectly with the existing spaces. Michael has many years of experience and it shows in both the quality of the work performed and the suggestions he offered along the way. Finding a contractor for a big job can be very stressful, these guys made the whole remodeling process easy & painless. I'm happy to say that this company knocked it out of the park in terms of quality of workmanship, timeliness, and fair pricing. Can't ask for much more than that. After this project I can confidently recommend Winthrop Place if you're looking for a local contractor. I just wish I'd found them sooner!"

"When jobs go smoothly, any company can shine. But what truly separates out high quality organizations is how they respond when things don't go as planned. Rock Roofing was absolutely rock solid re-roofing a nearly 100 year old detached garage. Up front, Beau was an exceptional communicator, and very responsive to my concerns and questions -- a big contrast from the other more well known roofers in the area, who seemed rather put out to even consider my small job. In their bid, Rock was the only one who committed up front to all necessary wood repair. When the old rubber roof (and many layers of old roofing and rotten old tongue-and-groove sheathing) was removed, the condition of the rafters was quite a bit worse even than expected. In my experience, most contractors and especially their crew would complain and blame at this point. Rock just brought in more lumber, additional crew to help, and proceeded to reconstruct the roofing support until it was solid. The final roof and front overhang look beautiful, Beau was in constant touch, and visited after the job was finished to make sure I was happy with everything. A solid, family-owned company committed to customer satisfaction. Maybe not as well known as some of the other outfits, but on the rise, and working hard for it!"

"Perfect! Taylor is extremely professional and my "do-it-yourself" husband who is rarely impressed with contractors was very impressed. You can't even tell the difference between the old brick and the new brick. We will be using them again in the spring when we work on a chimney and have a garage added."

"Diaz property solutions worked with us to understand the variety of things we needed done, Jason the owner was super professional, attentive to our requests, and stayed in touch and communicated very well. He made sure we were happy every step of the way. The work area was cleaned up daily and even though we had a lot going on it never looked like a warzone at our house. I will continue to use them in the future for all our home improvement needs. Would 100% recommend !!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Professionals charge between $60 and $95 per hour to install ornamental porch columns. The amount of time they need varies based on the condition of the porch, whether they need to remove old columns, and if there is any damage to your porch's structure. This cost can increase if more issues come up during the installation process.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
