"I had a kitchen sink with a clogged drain. More precisely, I had a clog in the drainpipe somewhere beyond the p-trap under the sink, which I had removed and found to be clear. I tried a plumbing snake, but about 10 feet in it just stopped, in the straight part of the pipe. When I found the pipe in the basement and tapped on it, the whole thing sounded clogged, which didn't make sense.
Having run out of options, I called Mr. Rooter at about 4:00 pm; they arrived by 5:30. The plumber, Mike, was great-- a wealth of information. I told him what I had done, and he asked if I found any whitish gunk on the snake when I pulled it out-- which I had. "Hardened grease" was his immediate diagnosis, which proved to be correct. Years of pouring grease down the drain, which eventually hardens and accumulates-- can clog the whole pipe; in my case it clogged at least a good ten feet of it.
Bad news? The only way to fix it (which I have since confirmed with other plumbers) is with a pressure hose contraption that requires its own special truck. Worse, it would cost $590.00. I was shocked by the price, and told Mike that I could replace the pipe for that much. He actually agreed, and showed me how I could improve the angle of the pipe when replacing it. But in assessing the problem I could see that replacement would have been a real pain because the pipe was under AC ducts, near a gas line, etc.-- and I didn't have the time (or the inclination) to do it.
So I opted for the $590 pressure truck-- which worked like a charm, and I was able to see a bucket of grease/gunk that had come out of the pipe. Mike did a great job and thoroughly explained everything.
The lesson here? No grease in the drain!! Let it harden and throw it in the trash. And run lots of hot water down the pipes before and after running a garbage disposal."
