Small jobs welcome

"Logan did a great job communicating with me throughout the entire process. Our job wasn't anything major - but Logan a treated it like it was a big deal. Did a great job making repairs to our deck. Very professional. We greatly appreciated their effort and approach to our project."

"I hired John to fix some doors for me before the Christmas holiday. He came right over & gave me a decent estimate for the work I needed done & scheduled within a week. Even though he couldn't replace some parts due to no supplies at home warehouse stores, he still managed to do what needed to be done. Hopefully, he will come back & do some addt'l work for me in the future."

"Very happy with every phase of the project. The deck had patchy coating of weather worn stain. It's a big deck, about --' x ---', with wood railings, gates, stairs. Charlie Simmons and his crew did a great job. Charlie was very knowledgable about the best stain to use. If I used the same stain I had used, in a couple of years I would have to again strip the old stain before applying new. Charlie offered a stain that does not require that the previous stain coat be stripped before applying new.. I think this will save me a lot of effort and cost the next time I refinish the deck. His and his crew's attention to detail really helped. Their cleaning and stripping process got into all the nooks and crannies and they applied several layers of stain until saturation. They were prompt and careful to tarp adjoining bushes, house, and so on. The stain looks great, and from what I find from searching the net, there's a lot of satisfaction with how it holds up."

"The repair of the deck was the major part of the work that  Jamie performed. His work was excellent and was reasonably priced. He responded quickly to my initial inquiry and performed the job as soon as he was able to. We are  very  pleased with the work that he did and would certainly utilize his services for other jobs in the future.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The choice between Trex, a brand of composite decking, and PVC decking depends on your priorities regarding budget, appearance, and environmental impact. Both materials are durable and resistant to moisture and insects. Trex is often considered more eco-friendly because it contains recycled wood and plastic and is 25% recyclable, while PVC is fully synthetic and harder to recycle. Aesthetically, Trex is designed to look more like real wood, whereas PVC often has a glossier, more plastic-like finish. In terms of cost, Trex is typically less expensive than PVC.

A deck that isn’t attached to a house is called a floating or freestanding deck. These standalone decks are built near ground level, so they usually don’t need deck stairs. Some don’t even require permits. Generally speaking, building a floating deck is faster and more DIY-friendly than constructing one that’s connected to your home.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Because adding a deck will yield a higher property value, you may have higher insurance costs. It’s important to follow the codes and regulations set by your local and state governments, so your insurance rates can be properly calculated. You may need an insurance revaluation after your deck is completed. The best course of action is to speak with an insurance professional to understand how adding a deck will impact your home’s insurance costs before you begin.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.
