"The deck was a complete disaster when I bought my house. I truly needed an exorcism. It was splintering, sun beaten and faded. Terry's crew came over, power washed the deck to a smooth surface, it restored the wood and then sprayed the deck. They showed up promptly for the work, were very efficient and I was stunned with how amazing my deck came out. Looked like a whole new deck. Will be hiring them again in the future. Amazing work."

"John came out and after looking at our deck, gave us a quote to wash and stain the deck. We felt very comfortable with him and did not want a second opinion..we said yes..He came out with worker and power washed the deck. Amazing how clean it became. We waited for weather to be dry and yesterday his crew came and stained the deck. They were very professional and the deck looks great. We would recommend Campbell Painting to anyone ."

"I hired John to fix some doors for me before the Christmas holiday. He came right over & gave me a decent estimate for the work I needed done & scheduled within a week. Even though he couldn't replace some parts due to no supplies at home warehouse stores, he still managed to do what needed to be done. Hopefully, he will come back & do some addt'l work for me in the future."

"Charley at Deck Rescue - Summit, did an outstanding job. My deck is decades old. It was grey and black looking and had mildew/mold on it. The lead-in to the deck steps was unfinished and jagged. The first day Charlie came out he reviewed what he was going to do. I asked about different options and he went through a lot of them. I had mentioned the problem with the jagged edge at the step lead-in and he suggested a solution, for which he would charge hourly. After we talked, he power washed and cleaned the deck. I wish I had taken before pictures, because this decades old wooden deck, looked like a new deck when he was finished. I really couldn't believe how great it looked, and this was just the washing and cleaning. Two days later Charley and his crew came out to stain the deck and repair the steps. He solved my problem with the steps beautifully - it looks perfect. Charley and his crew did not rush the job. They were very, very thorough. The final outcome is better than I could have reasonably expected. Charley was very professional and personable. I am glad I found the best company for the job."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.

Building a deck isn't too hard if you’re handy with carpentry, have the necessary tools, and are willing to put effort into it. However, other factors, such as plans, permits, and design, can be hard if you don’t have experience in those areas.

Note: You’ll need another person to help you build the deck (especially for framing and setting the beams). Building a deck yourself will be very difficult if you don’t have an extra set of hands to help.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.
