Small jobs welcome

"DJ was professional and polite from start to finish. The morning I was looking for a job to be done he came and looked at it and gave me a quote. He gave me the time frame he could have the job done and he stuck to his word. His work is meticulous. He cleaned everything up when he was done and left nothing behind. I have already given his number out to a couple people. It's very hard to find somebody as hard working and professional as this person. He gets five stars all the way around. I needed boards replaced on my deck."

"We hired Hillside to build a deck but we're having solar panels installed and asked them to look at the roof, which we knew needed some work based on the home inspection we'd had done at purchase earlier this year. As soon as they got up there, it was clear the roof was in much worse condition than we realized -- and they offered to completely strip it, add new wood all over, and re-shingle it, along with re-shingling the garage roof. They had a crew here first thing the next morning and the whole thing was completed by three in the afternoon. Amazingly fast and efficient. The new roof looks great, and the price was very reasonable. A few years ago, we'd had a similar job done on our old house and it cost three times as much and took over a week to complete (same size roof), so we'd definitely recommend Hillside for this kind of work!"

"Fence repair is still in limbo pending fencing parts ordered but pending delivery yet. Chuck did an Awesome job on my back deck repair and looks GREAT! He removed all the broken posts and panels in order to clear out my and my neighbors job...Very impressed with his work so far and keeps in touch with any details so as a Customer not in the Dark. RCL is a down to earth business that gets the job done and Fair prices that are written down on an invoice NOT texted via email or thru chit chat...I give 5 star's to Chuck and RCL Handyman Services in my book. You won't be disappointed!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

While it is possible to build a wooden carport yourself, especially if you are skilled in carpentry, professional construction is recommended. Professionals ensure structural integrity, proper anchoring, correct alignment, and the use of quality materials for a stable and durable result.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.
