"DJ was professional and polite from start to finish. The morning I was looking for a job to be done he came and looked at it and gave me a quote. He gave me the time frame he could have the job done and he stuck to his word. His work is meticulous. He cleaned everything up when he was done and left nothing behind. I have already given his number out to a couple people. It's very hard to find somebody as hard working and professional as this person. He gets five stars all the way around. I needed boards replaced on my deck."

"Steve and Justin were very professional and did quality work. They had a challenge, since the one area was on a slope along the side of the church building that needed repaired. They had to build a support plank to do the work. A few days earlier they needed a bucket lift to do another area. They removed all debris and did an excellent job, overall. Would highly recommend."

"They pretty much rebuilt the entire porch. It looks fantastic, I couldn't be happier with it. From start to finish, I told Don I wanted his expertise in making it look and function right, and he was very thoughtful and creative in how this build would affect the future plans for the house and the longevity and quality of the overall construction. The crew and himself were always respectful, honest people - exactly who I trust my life with the construction of my home and being around my family and valuables to. Thank you so much Don and crew of Hillside, I can't wait to have more of your help over the next several years to come!"

"David installed new recessed lighting in my kitchen and dining rooms, repaired the drywall, and painted accordingly. He made the process extremely simple on my end, was ceaselessly amicable, communicated every step very clearly, and performed the job to my exact specifications. He also secured a small piece of threshold flooring at no extra cost. Moreover, the job was completed expeditiously and was very reasonably priced. I highly recommend David."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
