"I really can't say enough good about Westin Air and the team of people who work there. Professional all the way. This was simply an annual system check-up on the TRANE HVAC system Westin Air installed late summer last year. Justin and Frank were the technicians. They neatly performed annual maintenance on the system and answered a few questions I had about the unit's staging system. These folks are PROS and I highly recommend them."

"Victor was wonderful. He was on time, professional, and explained everything he was doing. He was thorough and figured out that the problem was electrical instead of with my HVAC system. Very knowledgeable. I will be using this company in the future for any HVAC needs. Thanks!"

"When it came time to replace HVAC, the salesman from my current company was not being sincere in the sales process. I interviewed 3 other companies in Columbus and by far, Gary with Franklin Heating was upfront, honest, and went above and beyond in customer service. The 2 man installation team was efficient, professional, and very pleasant to work with. When I called with a question the next day, they sent the installer back to physically review the system and answer all questions.I couldn't have been more pleased with the service and people from Franklin Heating/cooling and highly recommend them."

"I’m so glad I went with APEX Pros. I was under the misconception that going with the bigger companies meant more money yet, I have had small business owners give extremely high estimates even without expressing the full scope of the job. I have also been taken advantage of by the smaller companies several times. With APEX Pros, the technician Romerial was extremely knowledgeable and was able to diagnose the job quickly. There were some broken support brackets from the drain pan and so everything was draining to the floor. In order to cool we had to swim basically. Floor was covered and each tech before APEX and Romerial had no clue what to do. It’s been going on for months and now I have a dry basement. The technician explained the job, showed me exactly what was going on, walked me through the full scope of the job, then estimated the time at two hours, brought a level of calm and comfort to me that I had not not even once during the hvac issue. I definitely recommend them."

"I had previously used Apex to fix a leak around my garbage disposal. They were quick to respond, had it fixed within an hour and I felt the cost was reasonable. I called them again, b/c my water heater started to back draft. When I called I told their scheduler that the water heater was back drafting and wasn't sure who I should call. She sent out one of their plumbers and the only thing he did was hold a lighter next to the exhaust pipe and said yep, it's back drafting, you need to call an HVAC contractor. Then he charged me $100 and left, which left me feeling ripped off and not surprisingly the next time I needed a plumber I called someone else."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.

To extend your HVAC system’s lifespan, it’s crucial to keep up with maintenance. This includes changing filters and thermostat batteries, keeping the outside unit clean and clear of clutter, and lubricating moving parts. Watch out for leaks, mold buildup, and blockages to ensure your unit stays in good working order. Spotting these issues early can be the difference between a simple, wallet-friendly repair and an expensive replacement.

During the summer, it’s best to set your AC to 78 degrees when you’re home and awake, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). For better energy efficiency, raise the temperature slightly to 85 degrees while you’re out of the house. The National Sleep Foundation advises lowering your thermostat to between 60 and 67 degrees when you’re asleep.

Most units are designed only to cool the house down to 20 degrees less than the temperature outside. This means that if it’s 99 degrees Fahrenheit out and you’re trying to cool your home down to 65 degrees, you’ll notice your AC is struggling.

Lower the blinds on all your windows, turn on your ceiling fans, and keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature to help your AC do its job. Investing in an HVAC maintenance plan also helps because pros will come out to inspect and tune up your unit regularly, keeping it in optimal working condition.

Yes, you should turn off your AC if it’s leaking. Turning off the system prevents more condensation from leaking and reduces strain on the unit if a damaged internal component or lack of refrigerant is the cause. While this may temporarily stop the leak, water can continue to drip from a thawing coil even after the system is off. As soon as you notice a leak, turn off the unit and investigate the source or call a professional for an inspection.
