"It was a true pleasure dealing with Chris F. He did some work for us to make our house more handicap accessible and it immediately has made a huge difference in our lives. While he was here we added a couple more general tasks that have been on my "honey-do" list forever. He was very flexible and quick to fix the extra items. He did a fabulous job on everything, we are so happy. His pricing was very very reasonable. I am already accumulating my next "Chis please fix this" list I'd like him to do around the house and yard. I would highly recommend him for other people to hire for small to large projects."

"Frank and his Team built a beautiful composite deck with integrated lighting. We were under a dead line to have the deck completed for a family event and they delivered on time with an amazing finished product!! All our guests and neighbors were complementing us on the deck. A night when the lights go on it really sets off the back yard of our home. Thanks Frank! You have some highly skilled Team members!!"

"Mike Concheck from MDG Maintenance repaired our roof and then fixed the ceiling where the roof leak had left damage. He did a great job on both projects, finishing in one day. We have called MDG Maintenance twice now, and both times we have been very pleased with the workmanship and professionalism of the service contractors. What a relief it is as a homeowner to be able to call upon a reliable company to do those jobs we cannot do ourselves."

"Perhaps the most important thing to know is that the deck project completed by Specialscapes was the second project for which Jay was hired. The first being last year as we were quite happy with the work and the manner in which Jay and his crew conduct themselves."

"Brandon handled everything efficiently. Jerry and Frank were great. They really cared about the job they were doing. They were very Good to my Golden Emma which is very important to me. I love the new bathroom. The entire house got a huge face-lift. They also solved a problem left to me by Regency windows. My new counters from Rainbow Marble are beautiful. I would hire them again."

"Excellent job. Painted several samples and had excellent recommendations in colors. I changed what I wanted on my gutters and trim late and he switched it without a problem. Just a nice guy that shows exactly when he said he would and does an excellent job. I will be using him next year to stain my deck. I am the 3rd house he’s done on my street in 2 years. Great guy!"

"We were very impressed with Pro Builders LLC and the deck project they recently did for us. Abe was responsive, quoted us fairly on converting our wood deck to composite, and followed up immediately to any calls or questions we had. My wife wasnâ t available when Abe came to quote the job, so he agreed - without hesitation - to return on a different day so she could be included in the planning. As the project got underway, we thought of some modifications we hadnâ t considered previously, including teardown/rebuild of a second deck. Abe provided feedback, made suggestions and spoke honestly about the scope. We agreed on a fair price for the changes, including the second deck, and he and his team quickly moved forward. We highly recommend Pro Builders LLC. Abe and his team have a remarkable work ethic and they are experienced in many types of projects â including painting and flooring. We expect we will be contacting him for other projects that arise!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

Covering your deck with a breathable tarp can protect it from snow, ice, and cold winter temperatures. This is a good winterizing solution if you don’t plan to use your deck at all during the colder months. However, it might be best to skip the tarp if you’ll still be walking on your deck or using it in a limited capacity.

Yes, you can build a deck over your outdoor HVAC unit, but you need to leave at least 5 feet of vertical clearance above the unit. If you don’t want your deck to be that high off the ground, you could build a floating deck in another part of your yard—again, as long as you leave at least 4 feet of horizontal space between the deck and your AC unit.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.
