Small jobs welcome

"We had Bucklew waterproof our basement and install a sump pump, drain to the street, egress window, and glass block windows. They were always prompt, great at communicating with us and answering all our questions, worked efficiently, and always wanted to make sure we were satisfied with their work. They went above and beyond every step of the way. Couldn't be happier, especially that my basement is finally DRY, even after all the rain we've gotten lately."

"We just had Jayson Wright, Service Manager, to our residence to do an inspection of our egress window and a potential water issue on one of the basement walls. Jayson did an excellent job and explained everything that we were concerned about. I fully recommend Jayson Wright and Groundworks for any and all basement issues involving waterproofing."

"We had Marty out to look at possible issues prior to correcting drywall cracks after having IFS out and giving us an estimate. I was looking for a competitive quote and instead I was advised to proceed with correcting the drywall since the crawlspace was nowhere to what I was previously told. Marty could have tried to take advantage of the situation but instead looked at our home as if it was his and said he would do nothing and let time show it's face if there is any other settling. Possibly $0 vs over $23k from a competitor. Afterwards I explained to Marty my concerns with the clear difference in the 2 quotes and broke down my quote from IFS. He stated 2 of the 3 items quoted were completely unnecessary and they wouldn't charge near the same price if we needed work in the future for jacks/piers. Let's hope that's not needed but if so I will be calling them back. They even provided a contractor for the drywall that beat the previous prices I was quoted."

"Shawn installed 3 lights for me. Did a great job at a good price. Update: 05/21/2021. This was a nightmare experience. Shawn said that he could build a cabinet in my bathrooms. He completed the 1st one, and the top was not straight, and there was a hole in the drywall. He then said he would be back to fix the unlevel part and do the 2nd cabinet. He added shelves without asking me where they should go, and while the cabinet door connected to the frame at the top, it did not connect at the bottom. I Paid him for the work, had paid for supplies for both cabinets before he started the work. He said he would make the corrections when he returned to do the 2nd cabinet. When he came to do the 2nd cabinet he needed money to go to Lowes for wood. He kept the change. The workmanship was terrible. There were large gaps between the wood, he spliced trim and did not miter the corners well. He attempted to fill the shortcomings in wood length (2+ inches) with putty filler and did not even fill the entire hole. He said he was finished. When he fixed the first cabinet he used a piece of wood that had a hole in it, and the exposed part appeared chewed up. He said he would fill those areas, but he did not. He said he would return the next day to fix the parts that were incorrect. I gave him his check in good faith. While I waited at home all day, he did not show and did not respond to texts until the evening. He came the next day. He again needed more money for wood. I never saw any receipts but did point-blank ask him how much money. He had from the previous trip ($12) and only gave him the difference. He said the work would only take an hour. He was here for several hours, and the cabinets look worse than before. He did not have the tools he needed, and he cleaned up his work with one of my bath towels, and a trash can full of toilet paper. He clogged the sink by trying to rinse construction debris down the sink. He used a disconnected toilet (surrounded by tools and toilet parts with the lid on backward) and never said a word. Later I noticed the smell and found the present. He asked me for nails to finish the work. The adjustments to the first cabinet resulted in more putty, a crack in the wall, and several more holes in the drywall. Nothing was repaired or mentioned. He then confessed that he laundered the previous check ($250) and needed a new one. He offered to pay the stop payment fee. I am certain this is the only reason he returned. He texted me from his car and accused me of not paying him because I did not like the trim, and he felt he should be compensated for sawing a hole in the walls. At this point, I had not mentioned not paying him, so it was clear to even him that payment was not warranted. He followed that text up immediately with a threat to put a lien on my house for the $250. I told him to come back and fix his mess, and he said he had to pick up his children. He said he would return in a few days, but only to replace 2 boards. Clearly, he does not have the skills to finish the work, but instead of saying so and apologizing, he chose to disrespect my home and threaten me with legal action. Clearly, I do not recommend him, and now I have to pay someone else to correct his work. Unfortunately, I had already paid $250 for the first cabinet. He has half a star here only because some rating level is required in order to complete a review."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Most modern egress windows installed in basements open outward into a window well, although some older homes have in-swing windows. Egress windows, like casement windows used in other parts of the home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, may open inward, and these windows are often larger than outward-opening windows.

DIY is possible for experienced individuals. Professional installation ensures compliance with building codes and proper sealing.

There are a range of egress window types available, including:

  • Single-hung: $100–$400

  • Double-hung: $250–$500

  • Horizontal/sliding: $150–$800

  • Casement: $200–$500

  • In-swing: $350–$700

When choosing a type of egress window, consider how you’d like to open it. For example, double-hung egress windows open from top to bottom and let plenty of fresh air in, whereas sliding windows slide open for easy access.

Basements are generally required to have windows for your safety. At a minimum, windows should provide an egress in the event of a fire. But basement windows do more than offer a way out; basement windows also offer natural light and ventilation in an area of your home that is otherwise dark and musty.

The primary benefits of an egress window include providing a safe emergency exit, increasing natural light in a space like a basement, and improving ventilation. Additionally, installing an egress window can often increase your property's value.
