"When I first called Sauers I asked for the chimney flue to be cleaned and swept. We wanted to clean the chimney and make sure our ceramic gas log fireplace was safe. They did not tell me that flues or gas log fireplace are never to be cleaned, that they don't need to be cleaned. He cleaned and vacuumed our gas logs, but he said he couldn't use his camera to look up the chimney because of the damper. He did say that this type of flue never gets blocked. There were bird droppings on the walls of the fire box. My fear was that birds or other small animals could have built nests in the flue. He said he couldn't tell unless he got on the roof and looked down the flue. He said that he couldn't do that because of the ice and snow. He tried to light the gas logs, but determined that there is an electrical circuit problem. We need to get an electrician. Bottom line, we got our gas logs and firebox cleaned. That's all, and we're charged the full quoted chimney sweep price. Had I known that they chimney flue never needed to be cleaned I would not have started the job."

Small jobs welcome

"William Byler is incredibly professional and does great work. He performed repairs to our 2 fireplace chimneys. He matched the color of the new bricks to the existing brick so I can hardly see the repairs. He also put decorative finishing touches to the top of the chimney. Looks much better. William is responsive, on time, and fair with pricing. John, co-worker, was professional and courteous. Iâ m extremely happy with William Byler masonry."

"They were great! They came in next day and mounted my TV (65in) over the fireplace within an hour. My mount was the MantleMount 540 - a pretty complicated one. They quickly learned it and got it up there efficiently and effectively. Plus, they made sure to check different specifications of mine to make sure I wanted certain aspects, positioning, etc. All around great job - worth every penny. Thanks guys!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

A chimney without a liner is not recommended. Chimney liners protect the surrounding structure from heat, reducing the risk of fire or structural damage. Just as important, liners prevent carbon monoxide and other toxic gases from leaking into your abode by guiding smoke and gases out more effectively. Remember, installing a liner ensures safety and extends the life of your chimney.

Although no heating appliance can be entirely risk-free, a fireplace insert is considered a safer alternative to a traditional open fireplace, thanks to their enclosed design. With a sealed combustion chamber, a fireplace insert effectively reduces the risk of sparks and embers escaping into the room, minimizing the chance of an accidental fire.

Additionally, an insert comes equipped with various safety features, such as tempered glass doors that create a barrier between the flames and the surrounding space. This enhances both safety and energy efficiency by preventing heat loss. As an added bonus, many inserts are designed to meet strict safety standards that ensure proper ventilation and combustion.

Even if a homebuyer has no intention of using the fireplace installed in the home they’re thinking of buying, it’s vital to know when the fireplace and chimney were last inspected. Aside from learning that it can operate properly, homebuyers will want to know that the structures themselves are sound and won’t affect the integrity of the surrounding home. With full knowledge, homebuyers can then make plans for any necessary repairs before they move in.

There are fire codes for a fireplace mantel made of wood or other combustible material. The mantel must be mounted at least six inches away from the fireplace opening on all sides with a non-combustible material—like stone or brick—installed between the mantel and fireplace. Building codes and regulations will vary based on your location, so before beginning the project, research the requirements in your area.

Most homeowners put a layer of compact sand or gravel at the bottom of their firepit, but you can also choose more decorative options like fire-resistant paving stones, bricks, or fire pit glass. Dirt by itself can even work, but other materials do a better job of spreading the heat around.
